I’m beginning to shop for the start of school, so I’ve started to wonder about a few random things…

Is the dresser free-standing or attached to the walls? How about the desk?

Can the beds be lofted or should I buy bed risers?

How bad is the lighting?

If anyone has any more of these random questions, feel free to add to this thread. Also, some answers would be much appreciated… Looking forward to move-in and the start of NSO!

What dorm are you in? I can only really talk for Riepe and maybe Ware.

In Riepe:
nothing is attached to the walls except maybe the closet. You can move anything anywhere you want. Before I left I put my desk in front of the door and my bed in the middle of the room just to mess with my RA.
You can loft your bed, though you are generally better off putting your bed at the highest setting and sticking in 7'' bed risers. It worked for me anyway. There are some beds that cannot be raised though, but you won't know till you get to campus.
Lighting tends to be bad in my experience. In the Quad and Hill lights tend to be by the door and aren't able to light the whole room. You will need a desk light and probably want another lamp.

1) The dresser is not attached, it can be moved anywhere.
2) I'd buy risers.
3) I never had an issue, but I like it dim anyways. If it's too dark, you can buy extra lighting from the bookstore when you arrive.

In the high rises -- the dresser can be moved around, and the lighting is kind of dim with the one provided lamp; the bookstore sells lamps though if you need one.

For English -- yes, there are mirrors over the sinks; the dressers in English are attached to the wall.

Often if there's no sink, there will be a long mirror behind the door; though you'll find that not every room has them -- sometimes they get removed for room painting and aren't always put back. The bookstore sells them pretty inexpensively if it turns out your room doesn't have one.

I'll be in Hill, so utilizing space in a smart matter is a must. Is it rare for Hill residents to loft beds and put their desks or drawers underneath?

The beds already have a set of drawers under them I'm pretty sure. Hill rooms, while they aren't big, aren't that small (I've seen smaller doubles in the quad) and unless you bring a lot of stuff you will have enough space.

Are the beds in the high rises not designed to be lofted? ... As in, purchasing a lofting kit is necessary? I think that only adds an extra 7 inches of storage space, so that's not a lot of space.

Also, is the desk attached to the wall? In all the pictures I've seen the desks in the high rises are right next to the window. Is that just a standard preference, or is the furniture built in there?

Risers are worth getting. If you want to loft your bed (as in it's basically the top bunk of a bunk bed) then Penn will do it for you if you ask and your bed is one that can be lofted.

About High Rise desks, I might be mistaken (only seen one room in them) but it seems like the shelves are built into the wall. You can put your desk wherever you want, but your shelf is stuck.

You can buy risers in the book store, though I'd recommend getting the 7'' ones from BB&B. The ones at the book store aren't high enough to stick drawers under unless you double stack.

Look at your room layout online. It will tell you if you have a sink. I think most rooms have a mirror though.
