Is there free wireless in the dorms? Or is it ethernet, and if so[I am going to be in a triple in sproul] would internet be accessible to three people at the same time if there wasn't wireless?

there is only ethernet but you can bring your own wireless router or rent a hub from stc (recommend getting a router since wireless internet is pretty useful when you want to study on bed or outside your room :D)

802.11n wireless is now provided in all Sproul rooms via UCLA_RES wireless network.

OMG, you made my day/night thanks for the update. =]

how bout in hedrick hall? is it the same deal?

technically i’ts not free; its part of room and board.

wireless is quite a bit slower than wired, but its there if you need it.

how about hedrick summit? do they have wireless there? (:

btw, how fast is the internet with speedtest.net?
I might buy an apple airport.

they had that installed last year but you won’t be able to receive service in most of the rooms unless you live next to the lounge or end of the hall way, so unless they installed new ones i doubt it’ll be too reliable…

Dykstra has wireless, too.

Sunset Village - I think I tested it and the speeds are nearly 2 meg downloads and uploads.

Generally you can get wireless access from the study lounges in the dorms. You might get lucky and be able to access it from your room but don’t count on it.

apple airport? people actually pay ridiculous price for that? i thought it was just an ordinary router with the apple tag on it so they sell for way higher than average router price :(

In the same link Nit provided, there’s a section for Res Halls. Sproul, Hitch and Saxon and De Neve have wireless in all the rooms. I live in Sproul now, and I’m one of the farthest rooms away from the lounge area. The n-draft wireless seems to be working alright.

oh yeah end of the halls generally get decent reception, see if you get it by around the middle of the hall way on southside, like the open walk away place in the middle, i lived in that room and we couldn’t get it at all…

That is equivalent to (Bits to Bytes):

Download: 10675.2 kb/s or 10.425 mb/s
Upload: 3576.3 kb/s or 3.49 mb/s

Wow… I need to get a 5TB external hard drive lol.
We could use megaupload right???

There’s no internet filter but assuming you use MU to pirate stuff you do so at your own risk. I get the impression that direct download sites like MU are fairly safe though at least in comparison to torrents and other P2P file-sharing programs.

anyone use peerguardian? is it any use on campus?
