Hi,

I'm currently a freshman hopefully transferring to UMD for the Fall 2012 semester. Is it easy to make friends as a transfer student? And am I placed in a freshman dorm or an upperclassman dorm?

Thanks

Hello Ricky93, I believe that it is easy to make friends as a transfer student. Get involved in extracurricular activities and find other students that have the same interest as you do in activities, programs, music, sports, and more. As for housing, it depends on how many credits that will be transferable to UMD. How many credits do you have? Freshmen are placed in a freshman dorm and if they are in the Honor’s College or a Living Community space, there are dorms that are exclusive for freshman in Honor’s College and in a a Living Community space. Thank you for your post.

Hey ricky I’m in the same spot as you, a freshman transferring into College Park. In any college with housing, the time most people get to be acquainted with each other was during freshmen year. It’s hard to get into a social circle as people do start building walls after freshmen year. If you don’t know anyone at college park its even harder. One thing you can do is to basically join clubs. Being with people with common interests breaks down the wall and allows you to join their social circle. Classes are impersonal as you can be sitting next to someone for an entire semester and not even know their name. I’m not sure if you have ever been in an environment where no one knew your name but if you want to make friends in college you basically have to reach out to people. Join in conversations if you know what they are talking about. If you want to hang out with them, ask if you can join. Display yourself as an interesting person and you should be able to make friends with anyone at college park.

Most likely you will be placed in a freshman dorm. They kinda put us transfer students in the lowest of priorities so most likely we would be placed to a quad room in a non-con dorm. The bright spot is that you have three roommates and one should be somewhat of a friend. Living in the non-con dorms do bring out a sort of brotherhood for anyone that had to go through it.
