Syracuse Dorms/ Halls

Hey guys so i have been admitted to Syracuse and Im very excited to go here. I was just wondering what dorms are the best. I dont know much about the dorms so can you guys help me out? I definitely want to stay in a hall where there would be parties and great people. I dont know if I would mind the walks to my class so yeah. Which halls have the best dining halls, utilities, etc. Thanks

Well it depends on what matters to you. I don’t think that great parties in the dorm is something that you really want in a dorm. There are lots of frat parties in houses and stuff. But when that stuff is happening on a Monday night and you have an exam the next morning, you’re going to wish that people were a little bit more calm. Also, all of the dining halls serve the same food. There are variations of different things and they are set up differently, but aside from special kosher halaal, etc kinds of things, you’re gonna get the same stuff across the board.

What I would prioritize is room size, bathroom type, and types of rooms. Also things like study rooms and lounges. I personally think that Ernie Davis has the best floorplan. It also has a gym inside of it–in addition to a dining hall which many other dorms have. There are split doubles and singles in Ernie Davis. It also has a lot of lounges and study rooms on each floor. My issue with it was that in my split double there was about 6 feet of space before the split which meant that if my roommate had her light on, it would shine onto my side. Also, the bathrooms weren’t the greatest. In each bathroom were two sinks, a shower, and a toilet.

Right now I live in Sadler Hall. Sadler has a dining hall, split doubles, open doubles, and singles. I live in a single currently. There are study rooms in the downstairs lounge and a lounge on each floor. The bathrooms are much better here though, personally. There are no ‘girl’ or ‘boy’ bathrooms. Instead there are individual bathrooms that each house a toilet, sink, and shower which allows for much more privacy.

I can go on but this is getting long lol Here’s a link to look at the floorplans of the different dorms. A lot of them have been renovated, but it’ll give you a good general idea. Keep in mind that you can’t actually chose what dorm you live in. You can however chose to be in a Learning Community which are generally in specific dorms each year.

Do incoming freshman decide where to live?

@Syracuse19 I know you can’t choose which dorm you’ll be in, but can you choose whether you get a single, split double, etc (assuming you pay the prices listed)?

@nyudreaming212 You can list a preference

@dchoi3333 No, you can’t decide where to live unless you pick an LC and then you might not get into it unless you’re in special ones like Honors.

@Syracuse19, how is the honors housing in Sadler? Is that a good option for a freshman admitted to honors?

@UpstateNYDad I think so! I typed some info about it higher in this thread that I’ve copied and pasted into this comment.

Right now I live in Sadler Hall. Sadler has a dining hall, split doubles, open doubles, and singles. I live in a single currently. @Syracuse19 do you know if Sadler or any of the other dorms have communal kitchens?

@tanookimario They don’t. The best you’ll get is a sink and microwave on each floor.

@Syracuse19 wow that really sucks. thanks for letting me know, though.
can you elaborate more on the bathrooms at Sadler?

@tanookimario Each floor on Sadler is comprised of two halls. On each hall are individual bathrooms that consist of a toilet, sink, and shower. There is one bathroom that just has a toilet and sink, but the rest are completely private and do not require sharing space with another person. All of the doors lock. There are no male or female bathrooms. This is the way that it is in many other halls including Lawrinson (which is next to Sadler) and Flint (which is on the mount).

@Syracuse19 thanks so much!
