I am a parent trying to put together a monthly budget for expenses - a question to returning NU students checking this forum - what is the cost of the washers and dryers? I read that can come off of your wildcat card - but I want to plan how much to allow. ALSO, is bed lofting/lifting permitted (Son is in PARC) and where have you found to be the best place to purchase bed lifts? Thanks so much!

My daughter says $1.00 per machine and she throws everything in together - dark, light, gentle, etc. Her clothes survived!

Like AMTC’s daughter, I do everything together at home…not ideal, but a hell of a lot cheaper when it comes to water and detergent, and I imagine even more so at school.

And bed lifts are technically “illegal” at NU, I think, but plenty of kids do it anyway. It would be wise to gauge the CA first, but I imagine it wouldn’t be a huge deal. Actually, in my dorm (CRC) at least, the beds are bunk-able…and one of the beds is built-in with a storage unit, while the other is not. So if you are worried about storage, you might look into more info about the specs of your son’s dorm and see if that’s how it works there. He might get the storage bed and not need lifts.

Thanks Perididdle and AMTC - I really appreciate your help!

“lofting” in that raising your bed up like 8 feet off the ground isnt allowed and I havent seen anyone do that in a dorm in my years at NU but plenty of people use the smaller bed raisers to get things an extra foot or so off the ground and noone gets in trouble for them. My CA freshman year actually tipped me off that there were some in the maintenance closet to take that previous students had left.

do we have to bring our own laundry detergent?

Yes and any other personal supplies you might need/want.

Okay thanks!
