My son was accepted to a top program at UIUC but is not interested in the school because of its party school reputation. Should he choose to attend, is there a dorm (private or otherwise) that has a more wholesome or academics focused community? He loves outdoor activites for recreation and will major in engineering

I would say that even though UIUC is a known party school, that doesn’t mean that everyone is partying. There are most definitely plenty of students just like your son who he can make friends with.
I would tell you son to think carefully of which school he wants to attend to because even though UIUC has a partying reputation, the job prospects with a degree from UIUC especially for engineering are very good.
Lastly, if your son doesn’t want to party, he doesn’t have to.
@msd228 You might want to check out Newman Hall. It is very close to the quad and is affiliated with St. John’s Catholic Newman Center. You do not have to be Catholic. They are taking room applications now so don’t wait if you are interested. It is considered Private Certified Housing to the university. Good luck!

@88jm19 Thank you for the suggestion. We visited Newman with an older child and my son was with us at that time. I think he is leaning toward Hendrick House right now, but who knows what will be available by the time he decides! I assume the university housing will be less costly so I am hoping if there are good options that he’ll be satisfied with that.
@wesley364 Thank you for the link. We were very impressed with the Engineering presentation yesterday at the Admitted Student event.
My son lived in Hendricks House for two years. It was quiet, especially the tower side, and had a lot of engineering students. The food was really good too
There are also Living Learning Communities that can help connect him to other similar minded students. And Allen Hall I believe tries to foster a small community. There’s Lundgren which is all male and is not crazy. The rooms are big and there are many singles. It’s a smaller dorm in the six pack so near the gym but many sophomores due to the singles. There’s also a substance free dorm (Snyder?)
My son lived in Allen Hall during freshman and sophomore years before getting an apartment during junior year. He loved it. He is an engineering major. The three engineering students that he is sharing an apartment with now also were from Allen Hall. He also liked that Allen Hall is close to one of the athletic facilities. My son is not a big partier but made a lot of friends at Allen. He read the descriptions of all of his housing options and Allen Hall ended up being his first choice. It was a very good fit for him.
@msd228 My D transferred in as a junior and lives in ISR. She says it is good for non-partiers. Lots of internationals and engineering students. Her roommate is a freshman and they get along well. They both joined the LLC housed in ISR.
In which dorm do most dance majors reside?
There is a substance free dorm called Snyder Hall. Also, ISR has a lot of engineering students and is more studying than partying oriented.
