I had initially thought that I would smother my walls in posters and pictures using tape. However, now that that prospect seems out-ruled, I was wondering how fellow Cornellians have adorned their walls? I would put up a bulletin board.. however it seems unrealistic to put up a bulletin board without using one of the prohibited methods.. The same goes with picture moldings. How do I hang pictures in frames without nails, tacks, screws, and/or adhesives?!

Any thoughts/ideas or current/old methods of wall decorating would be appreciated.

I used blue tape for all of my posters - it left the walls totally clear, but it was a little difficult to remove from the posters themselves. I also put up a whiteboard on my door and some corkboards for photo collages, both of which came with their own adhesive tape thingys. Those left a tiny bit of residue when I took them off, but not enough to be noticeable.

Additionally, I put up removeable white hooks to hang towels, a calendar, etc.

As for picture frames…I bought stand-up ones and scattered them around my room (desk, vanity table, bookshelf, the plastic three-tiered storage shelves from Target)…that way, I didn’t have to deal with actually hanging them up.

I agree with everyone else here…the blue tape really does work, and I am a total wall-smothering type of decorator. I’ve always wondered why the official rules bother to state that tape is not allowed, since in my experience RAs specifically say that if you’re going to hang something on your wall you should use blue tape.

^becuase they dont want to have to deal with cleaning up a copious amount of double sided tape that rips paint off of the walls, so they would rather just say no tape to avoid that

I am so glad this question was asked because I was wondering the same thing. So blue tape and 3M strips are okay? Any other methods of hanging things?

Question. D has colorful paper lantern that she wanted to hang in the room for extra light and some color. It is safe–not a fire hazard. It sounds like there would be no way to do that unless she was able to mount some sort of on command wall hook that had an arm on it. Or do people run a cable from wall to wall that things can hang on?

If you loft a bed in Donlon so that the desk fits under it, can you even sit up in bed? How dark is it under the bed where the desk is? Does if feel like a dungeon?

Hey! I’m in Donlon too! I asked about the bed lofting earlier, the general response was that there was more than enough room to sit on top and to put the desk under and work comfortably =] I sent in a request for my bed to be lofted, I figured that if I ended up not liking it, I could always request for it to be un-lofted, rather than realizing that lofting was awesome later on and being told there weren’t anymore lofting kits o_O

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I found these awesome cork board tiles that are 12 x 12’’ and come in packs of 4 that can be matted on walls =D and all the amazon reviews on the 3M Command Adhesive hooks look great. Blue tape is definitely now on my shopping list =]

Any other suggestions on how to decorate walls / make dorm rooms more homey will be greatly appreciated! =D

Thanks momma3 for the advice on how to hang a bulletin board.

Where can I find the hooks for the best price. It seems like wal mart and target never have them on sale. Years ago Costco had a variety pack for a steal, but I haven’t seen them there for a long time.

Also, if one lofts the bed, can you hang things from underneath it?

That sounds like a great idea. I found packs of 3 on Amazon for around 5 dollars, however, I’m not certain where else one would buy them o_O I was in Target today and had no luck in that department lol

Be sure to buy the Command products before you arrive in Ithaca for move in. You will not find them in any store by the time you arrive. The students in off campus housing have already arrived and the stores are already sold out of these types of products.
