Hi- I’m going to OSU in the fall and I will be staying in a quad in Taylor tower. First of all, will a TV fit in the room? The TV I have is 40 in, so will a TV stand fit or is there somewhere to put it? Also, will we be able to have a futon or couch or anything? And from people who have stayed in Taylor… How should the room be set up?
Check housing.osu.edu for room diagrams and dimensions to help you plan if things will fit, how furniture should be set up, etc.
A 40 inch TV would be a tight squeeze for the quad rooms - you would have to REALLY want that TV, and so would your other 3 roommates! Also, there is not really room for a futon or couch in the main living area. There are already 4 desks with chairs and a small “furniture type” chair and that pretty much takes up all living space. You really have to get used to a very tight living space if you are in a quad. My son lived there his freshman year, and while he had a great time, there was not much extra space. It took some getting used to but he quickly adjusted.
My son, who will be staying at one of the new dorms, got this email a couple of days back. This service is available in the new dorms only:
"Dear Ohio State Residence Hall Student:
Your new residence hall is equipped with the latest technology for television viewing using high-speed data lines and wireless computer access rather than traditional coaxial cables. You will have access to this Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service through our vendor, Philo. While using Philo, you will be able to view all the channels included in the Ohio State cable package, plus HBO (including HBO Go.)
While on campus, you can access this service through many web browsers on Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X computers. Additionally, most Apple iOS devices and several Android mobile devices can access an app to run Philo services. A comprehensive list of compatible devices is included.
A “smart TV” is not necessary to view IPTV. As many students choose to watch television shows on their tablet or computers, you may even choose not to bring a television. If you do wish to use a television, IPTV can be viewed on a standard television through either:
a Roku set top box, plugged into your television and connected to Ohio State’s network
mirroring your iPad or iPhone via AppleTV
connecting your computer to your television as a display
Philo is available only to residents of Bowen, Raney, Scott and Torres and is provided at no additional cost to the student. During the semesters you live in one of these halls, you will be able to watch IPTV services as long as you are on Ohio State’s computer network. This includes wired (Ethernet) and wireless (WiFi) connections.
If you have questions about the service before you arrive, please email: resnet@osu.edu -or- submit your question to us at: http://slts.osu.edu/support.aspx
We look forward to seeing you on campus!"
