Alright I feel stupid but this has been bothering me for a while now.. is there a guideline regarding TV size in the dorms? I'm going to be in a Towers double. I've heard 17, but that is really really small. Right now I've got a 32" which I'm pretty sure is too big but I'd just like to know what others have done?

Also, xbox live and online for playstation... Does it work in the dorms? I have heard that you need to use a cd and install it to your computer to use internet in the dorms; so that probably wouldn't work with an xbox? Anyone know how this works either?

Keep in mind, though, that someone may be envious of that great tv and may want to walk away with it. Check out page 45 of the handbook about registering your serial numbers with the campus police in event of theft. Also, for laptops, I think the computer services will provide you with free software to help track your laptop in the event of theft. Chances are you won’t have to worry about those things - but better safe than sorry.

I remember there being something in a move-in guidebook about a 17" TV but it’s probably just recommended (gaming on such a small screen is just ridiculous lol). There was a rumor going around early last year in Towers about someone having a 40" flatscreen in their room.

The size suggestion may be for space reasons rather than anything else. Because the Towers are round, the rooms have a different shape. I have only been in the single rooms, but about the only place you could put a tv is on the wall over one bed or on the top of a dresser.

That refrigerator size should be fine. A printer is good to have in your room because they aren’t found in every building, you’d have to print to a computer lab on campus.

How about a 1000watt microwave I won at the graduation party at school…the “limit” is 700watts lol we have 3 microwaves, one from 1992, and none are 700 or lower

My daughter is in the Towers this summer. We bought a microwave before she left and didn’t even check the wattage! Perhaps no one else does either.

FWIW the sheet we got from Bed Bath and BEyond said 800 watts or less. Could it be thats because of power capabilities in the building and anything higher might blow the circuits?

If you didn’t already buy one–or won one, lol–and don’t live close enough to Pittsburgh that you can easily take it home over the summer, it may make more sense to rent one for the year and not worry about putting it in storage. Once we knew who S’s roommate will be, he contacted him on Facebook and they agreed to split the cost for renting a fridge/microware combo. It boils down to $100 per person (per year)–just another option.

Thats was our thought but DS roomie ays he has a mini fridge he is bringing. That leaves the microwave to us. Fortunately they are pretty inexpensive.

You have concerns about being able to play video games on large enough of a tv? With the size of the rooms, using a small screen shouldn’t ruin your life. And it is easy to get used to. The more stuff you have, the more likely you are to get robbed. If you really want to be cool, get a projection monitor. Then everyone will want to sit in your dorm room all day and you will make lots of friends.

lol the issue isn’t that I won’t have a big enough tv to play video games on… it’s just that I don’t have any smaller TVs at the moment and would have to buy another one just to even have one if 32 is too big. but thanks for the attempted low-blows :)

about the bed bath and beyond sheet, is it the same as the “college checklist” on their website, or is there a specific one for Pitt?
