Are there any dorm room decorating restrictions that are NOT posted on the following UVA website page that anyone can think of? We're making purchases, planning, and whatnot and don't want to get there and start setting up only to find out something isn't permissable.

What’sthe deal on bed risers? I thought I read somewhere (I can’t remember where) that you could only raise the beds a certain amount. It would be great to have a link to that. Thanks!

we have a charming neighbor who will be a RA at UVA next year…sweetest guy, in the Band, lots of Wahoo spirit…he decorated his hall last year with twinkly lights and they made him take the lights down in his hall–fire hazard. He is so good hearted and inclusive…will make a great RA.

so if you were going to string lights or Japanse laterns, best not. ha. :)

if you nail things etc they will charge you. but it’s worth it imho to not have blank boring white walls. another choice is to use command 3m strips for posters. don’t use them for anything even like a posterboard though or it will fall down. the velcro strips are the best. let them stay up on the wall alone 24 hours before putting the poster on them though.

you can only have bed risers in places like some alderman dorms. i don’t really know anyone who did them but if you need more underbed storage and don’t mind a hike into bed when you’re deliriously tired/drunk/have a girl over then sure go for it… lol. mccormick and brown and so on can’t have them because of the captain’s beds

In many dorms the walls are made from cinderblock, and you CANNOT make holes even if you wanted to. In other dorms - they make this putty you can use to fill holes. I’m not recommending that you break the rules, but it is an option.
I recommend a very thin table for the TV.
You can’t use bed risers if you have a captain’s bed (bed with draws underneath). For all other beds, the standard size risers should be fine. They just don’t want you to make a loft, because many people built lofts that fall and cause injuries. I think you can make a loft bed if you have it approved, and some singles come with lofts.

Kabobi, jc: UVa’s rules against nails/screws in walls, and semi-permanent modifications in general, are pretty much common to all colleges. What I remember finding a little whacky and somewhat confusing were the rules regarding power strips. As to inspection thoroughness, if you break the rules you’d better count on paying the fee because they know what to look for.
I was thinking there might be a possible exception though- if you end up living in one of the freshman dorms that they’re tearing down at the end of the year (ha-ha)! Last year my son lived in Maupin which I had heard was going to be demolished this summer, so I thought we could maybe get away easy. But they decided to leave it up, so we were stuck with cleaning the place pretty thoroughly (you can’t win 'em all I guess).
