Dorm Rooms

I've never been to AA, so I have no idea about Dorm rooms. I applied for South Quad housing with the economy triple. How small is this economy triple? Is it any better than economy double? How are these rooms laid out? What is the bathroom situation for honors housing?
Thanks

Your room is going to be 12x19. There are two built-in closets, each of which has a mini-builtin dresser. One will be in the corner nearest the hallways, the other one will leave a little nook for a medicine cabinet and possible a sink (which about 1/2 of the rooms have). That room size is a normal double, but for an economy triple they stick and extra person and set of furniture in there. They have building block furniture, so you can at least in theory set it up in many different ways. Since you have three people, you're best option is going to be to have everybody loft their bed, which looks roughly like this if my ascii skills are up to par

One of those h thingys is a dresser with a cabinet on top holding up the bed, the other one is your desk with a cabinet holding the bed up. You can put two along the wall that doesn't have the sink nook, and one along the other wall with a little bit of free space left over, and a clear path down the middle. Your other option would be to have one set of bunk beds, loft another bed, and then stick the extra desks/dressers in the space that's left. You can in theory do a triple loft, though it's not a "university approved position", and doesn't give you much space to sleep. You'll wanna talk it over with your roommates first, but three lofts is probably the best way to go.

So is an economy triple really cramped? Do you have any free space at all? Would you recommend it?

Dilksy is the wrong guy to ask. He switched rooms upon finding out he was in an economy triple. They're pretty cramped, yeah. I guess it's just a tolerance issue, but no, i wouldn't recommend it.

hehe...those squad trip's...omg...they are about the size of the East Quad doubles (which you'll see at orientation). Fairly tight, but then again, according to my honors psych class, proximity breeds liking, so maybe your relationship with your roomates will be extra fun lol.

KB

this thread reminds me of cookies

Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it. Why would you REQUEST an economy triple??? Wasn't that plainly spelled out as the worst option on the list? Did money have to do with it? Just curious.

probably b/c its cheaper...not the worst reason in the world...

What happens is you apply for Honors housing, but since there's a limited number of spots some people get stuck with the econo triples, no matter what your listed preferences for room type are. I personally weaseled myself out, mainly because I study and do work in my room as opposed to libraries/study lounges, and it'd be more difficult to do that with 2 other roommates. Roommate dynamics are certainly more interesting (mainly because of the possibility of 2 roommates being closer than the 3rd), but usually it works out. Pretty sure it's bigger than the double I stayed in at orientation. Not as bad as it's made out to be...but a double is definitely a more ideal situation.

I had an economy triple my freshman year, and doubles are definitely nicer (although I lofted in the double, but not in the triple). It's not that bad, roommate issues are the big deal, as dilksy touched on. You get roughly the same amount of free space per person either way. And yes, it is cheaper (around $1500 I think).

Yeah, I chose the economy triple cuz it was cheaper. I have really no idea what to expect, so I'm like, "heck, I'll just pick the cheapest one and see what it's like". So, is there like enough space to fit a TV and microwave and fridge?

All dorm rooms can be a space challenge -- so make sure you work out with your roommates who is bringing what. No need for 3 TVs. If money is an issue, a couple of thoughts for 2nd year -- apply to be an RA and, if that doesn't work out & you're female, look at Henderson House.

pretty much everyone has a TV, microwave, and fridge. You'll find a way to fit 'em im sure, haha.
