Dorm Situation-- Please Help!

My two friends and I are confused and don't really know what to do about housing, and we just really need some help with figuring which plan is best quality-wise and price-wise since we aren't familiar with the dorms. We really want to room together in a triple, but trying to coordinate room type, rate, and residence halls with other factors might make us split up.

Factors:
-Private bath
-Not a party environment-- we want to focus (but we also don't want to be completely anti-social)-- therefore we don't mind North Campus.

-parking (my friend is bringing her car, but depending on what she really needs it for, this may not be as big a deal)

These are our main considerations:

Baits:
- Double in a 3-person suite ($9,188) + other person requests same floor (<--- what I'm leaning towards, but I keep hearing bad things about Baits)
- 2-room double with private bath ($11,300) + other person requests same floor

Barbour/Newberry:
- 2-room double with private bath ($11,300) + other person requests same floor

Bursley:
- 2-room triple with private bath ($11,300)
- 2-room double with private bath ($11,300) + other person requests same floor

Oxford:
- 2-room triple with private bath ($11,300)

South Quad:
- 2-room triple with private bath ($11,300)

West Quad:
- 2-room triple with private bath ($11,300)
- Triple with private bath ($10,608) (<--- my second choice, but I've heard that West Quad houses a lot of the athletes, which I don't think I'd care for too much because they probably like to party)

You can do the triple in Baits with the private bath. The person in the single room would have to pay more than the two in the double room. Unless you are on North Campus or in Oxford, the car is going to be a major hassle.

Baits 1 double

actually I’d take pictures of the Baits 1 double for you if you want (I’m in one). Because I know the floor plans on the housing website suck

res ipsa, you mean the double in a 3-person suite, right? How does that work exactly? Since it’s listed as a double, how do you get the third person added in? And how does the pricing work since it’s listed with a flat rate?

MLDWoody, that would be great! And if you know anyone who has the triple suite, I’d appreciate it if you could get some shots of that too (that’s the one we’re leaning towards if we do go with Baits.) Overall, though, we’re looking more at West and South Quad in terms of the whole package. I keep hearing terrible things about Baits.

You want a quiet situation, that’s Baits.

Think of it like this, you are not perminantly removed from the social scene if you are at Baits. But, if you were on Central would you have the ability to get away from the social scene to have some quiet?

Basically Baits would let you have either. You will have to ride the bus, which isn’t that fun, and you will have to walk to Bursley to eat, which is not convient but definitely doable.

Plus, 40% of freshamn end up on North, so if you said Baits I, you’d probably get it. Where you can’t be sure with the other dorms. My suitemates (the other two dudes I share the bathroom with) both requested eachother and they got put together.

You can’t live in Newberry if you didn’t sign up during the time period designated for themed housing, so you can rule that one out-- it’s all full. Otherwise, I would have recommended it.

I wouldn’t be as quick to dismiss Baits. If you’re there with friends I am sure it would be fine, as long as north campus doesn’t bother you.

What is the timeline for incoming (Fall 2011) freshman to start applying for housing. I thought applications weren’t coming out until end of March?

OP, while you are encouraged to list your preferences I would not want to see you labor under the illusion that you actually have much real world control over your housing as a freshman, so it’s quite ambitious (and possibly wasted energy) to be establishing so many variables (eg. bringing a car is ridiculous, don’t even think you can get parking first year and you certainly don’t need it in AA).
You will all be placed in a lottery, and then when drawn, given preference IF housing is able to accommodate you (and the OTHER 5,500 people asking  )

General rule of thumb is that rooming with friends is a little risky in that folks change during their U. experience and mixing thing up a bit is considered to be a good thing. I’m not sure why you actually want to room together. You might wish to consider carefully whether your friends might remain better friends without the stressors of limited space.

MLD is correct that your ODDS of getting a triple with private bath with parking area and being able to co-select roomies are greatest at Baits. So if that’s what you’re aiming for, put Baits as your first choice.
Good luck!
