dorm selection

So I know freshman don't always get their priority in dorm placement, but I was hoping I could get some info on the dorms. Specifically:

How crazy is East? How loud are weeknights and how late does the general population stay up?

Was is difficult or helpful living with upperclassmen in Pollock or South?

Did anyone live in the FISE house or another special living option?

Thanks a bunch!

I’m also curious on this matter too, my roomate and I requested east

Hey I did a summer course at Penn State and i stayed at the Pollock Halls, which i am pretty sure is the Same Pollock your tacking about but in case for reference a building that is very close to it is called Shunk Halls

Why I liked It

Convenience
Mcdonalds , Dunkin Donuts , Subway , Mclanhans (Convenient Store: From Food to Computer Cables , even sells PSU Shirts, some nice school supplies, and eve Fans !, Dining Halls, and the HUB (Like a Mall , Dining , A few shops , Book Store) all very close to the Resident Halls. Also in the Dinning Court they have a Mini Mart but i preferred Mclanhans.

Many of the classes are a 5 - 15 minute walk , and if there are classes that are far a way you can just take the “Loop”. Near the resident Hall is also a nice Library with computer labs.

As for recreation there is a lot to do Basketball Courts, and a Volleyball Field are right outside. There is also lots of grass so its great to kick a soccer ball around , throw a frizz bee , or just hangout with friends. Not to far again is a place for Paint Ball area , and you are a short walk away from the pools, Tennis Courts, and a little bit farther is the Official Recreation Center , with an indoor track , and tons of Basketball courts.

Pollock Halls is great your dorm room is a bit small 2 beds , 2 closets , 2 desks. You share a bathroom per floor but its a great way to make friends. There are a few residence Halls that are very close by and connected I hope this helped you.

As for South i am not sure :(

As a current freshman, I can tell you this…

For the fall semester, I lived in North, which are suites (mostly special living options). I am moving to East for the spring (due to roommate issues). I would not recommend North, though, for other reasons. It is hard to meet people within your floor/building since the suites are very isolated (the doors don’t stay open easily, and not many people keep them open anyway). It’s mostly upper classmen, not a good choice for freshmen.

East can get loud, from what I’ve heard, but I know it’s a great way to meet people. The rooms are very small, but probably the best area for freshmen since everyone is in their first year.

Pollock and South are both great for their location close to downtown and the HUB. The rooms are bigger and nicer than East. Many freshmen live in these areas, so there’s a good chance you’ll get it if you request it (if you accept early, that is)

West is very nice as well. The rooms are a good size, the food is the best on campus, and the area is very pretty. It’s also the closest to the library, which can be a good thing when it’s 15 degrees in the winter.

Hope this helps, good luck with your decisions!

My freshman daughter requested North, has three junior suitemates. She has made a lot of freshmen friends in her dorm and likes it very much. She is living in North again next year. She didn’t want to be part of the big party scene.

that is true, North is very quiet. So if you don’t want the huge party scene (which I didn’t), it’s a good choice. I just had a bad experience with my roommate, and have met more friends that live in other housing areas.

Thanks everyone. I decided to request Pollock. Hopefully it will work out well.

If somehow I get admitted into the Honors College should I stay in those dorms or the freshmen dorms?

I did a 3 day visit with the ROTC a few weeks ago and I stayed in east hall (I think it was Fisher or Brumbaugh hall) on the ROTC floors (top 2)

My first day (before I grouped up with ROTC) I did a tour and ate at Pollock, which was realllllly damn good. Turkey on bread, gravy, mac n cheese, and ice cream. It’s like the dinner you always wanted, but never realized.

Then I met up with the ROTC guys. Their rooms (either Fisher or Brumbaugh) weren’t huge, but they got everything to fit in them and were pretty content with it. They ate at Findley, which was also good (they were serving pasta.) They said there was always something to do.

However, I will never forget one thing one of them said "Apparently last night, there was a sex party on the floor below us? Yeah, they gave out condoms and just ****** "

I didn’t spend much time in West campus, but I remember a tour guide saying that if you are going for engineering, then West is better because it is closer to the dorms.

I’d really recommend a tour if you can though.

Wow, that’s helpful thanks a lot. I mean I want college to be fun, but maybe not THAT much fun.
