Hey guys! I have been assigned to the pollock halls. I just wanted to ask, are they any good? I've been put into mifflin to be specific. Someone tells me there are roaches, im scared! Is this true?

OK let’s see:

-East:
Pros: With all freshmen (not ALL OF the freshmen), surrounded with friend-making opportunities; if you’re looking to party, chances are so are the people here, either in their room or pregaming before getting the White Loop downtown; honestly there are no other pros
Cons: Geographically isolated from buildings where your classes will most likely be; can be loud/rowdy at pretty much any time of the day/night; smaller rooms with different setup compared to those of Pollock, South, etc.

-Pollock:
Pros: Great location on Pollock Road near main academic buildings; slightly larger rooms than in East (more floor space); generally much quieter, but that’s not definite for all floors obviously
Cons: Not necessarily in an entire hall full of freshman, mixed with some older students (not by floor though); “miss out” on the “freshman experience” of East

-South:
Pros: Large rooms; location
Cons: Walk to Redifer could be annoying (without Simmons); not many freshman live here outside of the Honors College (if any)

-West:
Pros: Best food options, hands down; can be a convenient location; nicest area in general; many SLOs are here so you could build a sense of community (I guess?)
Cons: Depends on the situation, but it could be far away from your classes; not too many freshman live here, though still some do

-North:
Pros: If you prefer the “suite”-style living, with your own bathroom and such; air conditioning
Cons: Seems kind of isolated

I hope that helps a little. I kind of rushed through this but I’m sure other posters will be able to add to/correct what I said.

This is what duke (psu student on cc) said about all the dorms. He wrote this not me. If you have any more questions go here and ask duke is really good about answering.

I am in Atherton!

@DylanK only north has air con? I guess that every room has good heating at least right?

like i said i only copied and pasted this from a similar question someone else asked duke.
So, i am not sure, go here and ask http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/penn-state-university-park/1083915-ask-me-anything.html

Pollock dorms are nice sized and located nicely on campus. You’ll have a mixed crowd- some freshmen, some sophomores, and some upperclassmen, you probably will be mixed by floors (i.e. your one neighbor may be a junior living in a single, while your other neighbor is a freshmen double). I am not sure what people keep on referring to as the freshmen experience of East. That many young adults (18) indulging in the collegiate environment without mom and dad can cause some issues in the dorms. You won’t be missing much not living in an East hall dorm.

No, there is not a cockroach problem in the dorms. Sometimes during the summer, when the showers are not being used, the insects will crawl up through the drain. Housing staff takes serious measures to correct the incidences before the majority of students move-in in August.

Woah I lived in Mifflin too. Super-convenient location compared to other halls in Pollock. All of what cwryan1 said above is true too.

how are hardbrent halls at Pollock?

I’ll be a sophomore this year and did not live in East last year and was pretty happy. It was nice just to be able to visit my friends that lived there. from my own experience and what I hear, it is much better to hang out in East and leave than sleep there!!

Was wondering for (girls) what is absolutely essentials for the dorm. Rugs, desk lamp, mirrors, risers for the bed, and does she really need x-tra long sheets? They sell so much dorm essentials I was just wondering what the girls in east or pollock halls really need most? thanks so much:)

I just visited Penn State yesterday. I saw a room in Pollock and got to talk to a student, so I’ll answer a few questions with my limited knowledge. Concerning the heating, it’s apparently top-notch and actually manages to get too warm sometimes, so you definitely don’t have to worry about that. Management also takes how the students feel into consideration. Concerning what you need, at least in Pollock, you definitely need a rug and some lamps because the ceiling light is harsh. You can use risers, but it’s a bit tricky because there’s shelves on the wall right above the bed so you’ll have to move the bed around a bit. No desk - it comes with the room. There’s also a mirror, but if you want one for up-close it wouldn’t hurt. Maybe a desk chair because the ones that are provided look uncomfortable, or at least a cushion if you plan on studying in your room. You don’t really need much for clothing storage because the closets were big and could definitely fit more than you need for a semester. And x-long sheets are a must at most colleges. That’s all I could think of.

kpattz, I was there to! I saw some other dorms, think they were in south halls. They were not bad at all. Just no air condition. However the guy said if you leave the window and door open it isnt too bad.

@nitnat…

Yes, extra-long sheets are a must. Regular twin size sheets won’t fit the extra-long mattress. And I highly doubt she will be bringing her own mattress. In both East and Pollock the Desk is built in, if I remember correctly, so you won’t need to actually bring a desk. But make sure she is well stocked with stock to go on it (i.e. a printer, and lots of paper, ethernet cable, etc.)

As a guy, I can’t speak for stuff a typical girl needs. But I wouldn’t forget what I mentioned above.

If you don’t keep your room clean there will be roaches. Otherwise there really shouldn’t be any bug infestation whatsoever. Cleaning staff cleans everything but your room every day. They are also usually very nice people. South/Pollock halls area is really nice size and geographically wise. As someone said earlier East halls is a lot more fun. Everyone is a freshman and they are all in the same boat as you. I lived in East freshman year and met everyone including my current off campus roommates there. Usually if you are placed anywhere outside of East, you are put in either an entire freshman only floor or residence hall. Hope I was of some help to you.

I would definitely recommend bringing a fan. It can be quite hot at the beginning of the semester. When S lived in Pollock (Hartranft), he and his roommate usually had two going at all times.

Nitnat, you might also want to bring a memory foam mattress topper; the mattresses are not the best. DS used a regular twin topper, which was long enough for him (@ 5’10") and cheaper than an XL. It worked fine with the XL mattress and sheets.
