Dorm Selection?

I am trying to choose dorms to apply for and select on my housing application. I’m kind of lost as their are so many choices. What are some good dorms on campus for freshman to live in? I am open to coed and don’t really have a preference about the style of the rooms. Thank you! Roll Tide!

Suite style is by far and away the best. They are the newest, nicest, cleanest, etc.

The best are probably Ridgecrest, the one with the attached underground parking deck, I’m thinking it’s Ridgecrest South, but I am not sure.

Ridgecrest South does have the attached parking deck but to access it, you do need to leave the building and use the elevator in the courtyard.
Just a reminder, that the suite style apartments are the most expensive housing choices on campus, however, they are really “super”. Having a bedroom to oneself can be priceless.

My D is in Ridgecrest east. My only complaint is that just about everything on campus is a long walk! If OP is thinking about sorority life, you can’t beat Tut for convenience. Besides Ridgecrest, presidential and riverside are also quite nice.

Thank you for all the info!
@robotbldmom‌ do you know the difference in price of suite style/traditional? I looked on the website but couldn’t find a price list.

Rate information is available at housing.ua.edu. Click on the “assignments” tab and scroll down to “rates”. Rates are only available for the current year.

Rates for next year aren’t posted yet, but a double in a traditional dorm is $2,800 per semester this year. A room in a four person suite is $4,400 per semester.

Presidential is the newest.

Which dorms would be the hardest to get into if you do not select early?

Also, are the dorms open during school breaks and holidays? IF DS attends, travel will be rather expensive, so I don’t see him coming home more than once or twice his freshman year.

Dorms must be vacated after final exams in the fall, and open back up after New Years. For international students. some dorms are kept open. Fraternity houses should not be affected.

Dorms vary in when they are open:

http://housing.ua.edu/on_campus/calendar.cfm

You do not have to choose a dorm now to apply for housing. You have until when room selection occurs, typically April or so.
