Dorms at Alabama

My D and I just visited UA last week. After the tour we took a peek in Ridgecrest East and loved the Apartment style layout that they have there and Lakeside as well. She wants to join a Sorority and all the residence halls on that side of campus are community baths and she was turned off by that.

Anyone have an experience with living on the northside dorms like Ridgecrest/Lakeside and going through Sorority life, especially the pledge period when you are always over at the house?

Anyone have experiences with the community bath dorms? There are so many at UA vs. other schools we have seen. Auburn’s dorms are all suite style or apartment style.

BTW, she LOVED Alabama. Even though her two older siblings attend FSU and Dad is an alum. And I say good for her! And OUCH on out-of-state. :)

Alabama offers good scholarships to OOS students.

Out-of-State Scholarships for 2009-2010 - Types of Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama

Thanks. She would not qualify for those but she has been accepted. We'll make it work if she wants to go there.

But Auburn's suite style typically has only one tiny bathroom to be shared by four people. (Son and I toured the dorms and saw the dorm they presumably wanted to show off.) Son said he'd much rather have access to community style than share a cramped single bathroom with three other people (and likely be responsible for cleaning it). Just his preference. The Alabama dorms that are suite style typically are structured to have a bathroom shared by only two people. Son loved Alabama as well, and has been accepted for Fall 2009. Not sure yet if he'll attend -- waiting to see his other options.

It's not a long (about 10 minute) walk from Lakeside, Riverside, Ridgecrest dorms to Sorority Row. My daughter and many other sorority women lived in Riverside last year and managed just fine. Daughter even swears the walk once or twice a day kept the "freshman 15" away from her hips and thighs!

I'm living in Lakeside this year, and my roommate is in a sorority. She didn't seem to have any problems during rush week and she sometimes carpools with some other sorority girls in Riverside/Lakeside to the functions at the houses. Besides, if you live in Tutwiler (the main girls' dorm) not only do you have the community bathrooms and slow SLOW elevators, you most likely have to move your car on football gamedays. It is definitely worth it to live in Lakeside, Riverside, or Ridgecrest and just walk because like you mentioned, it's good excercise and really not too bad.

However--- I have another friend in Tutwiler who seems to love it because you get to know most of the people on your floor, so it really depends on what you're looking for! Hope this helps.

What are the names of the dorms for the Honors College students? Are they coed by building, by floor or by suite?
Thanks
