Hey everyone,
If I get accepted, I will be coming in as a transfer (junior status) for Fall 2009. The housing department asked me to list my top 5 preferences of housing but I’m not sure which ones to choose. I prefer a quieter environment; I’d rather have a less social place because its hard for me to concentrate sometimes. Also I want either a double or a single (one roommate or no roommate). I’d love to have air conditioning too if possible.

Congrats! My D is was a spring admit sophomore this year at USC. She was housed in Webb, which she’s quite happy with. It’s conveniently located right next to the gym & credit union, recently renovated & pretty quiet, I believe. She shares a room with another girl & there are two other girls in the apartment who share the other bedroom. The 4 of them share a kitchen, bathroom & living room.

Next year, D will be at Cardinal Gardens & as a sophomre, S was at Troy East. Both of them had two-bedroom units with 4 people. I think they’re more common than 2 person/1 bedroom units. D was offered a 2 person/1 bedroom unit at Webb but declined it in favor of having 4 people living together at Cardinal Gardens. She would also have been happy with Webb but wanted to have space for 4 rather than just 2.

Neither of my kids have tried a single because both feel that college is where you try to figure out how to live with others, so don’t have experiences to share about singles. Many of the housing units have A/C–check the housing website.

I’ve heard that Radisson is NOT an option for housing for 2009-2010, but you can double-check that. I did not want my kids to have maid service in any case. That is part of what you pay for at Radisson and I feel it is not a good thing for students to get used to (as a parent).

Birnkrant is a great dorm and I’d recommend it by a mile- outstanding location and a perfect mix between being social and “quiet-time”. Notwithstanding Parkside, probably the best overall.

Actually I have the option between Webb Tower, Century, La Soborne, and Cardinal Gardens. Does anyone know the difference between them all? Thanks!

Webb Tower is very popular. On the day the lottery opened, the place was filled up by noon that day. My D had a good slot in the lottery that afternoon on the first day, and didn’t get in. So…kind of doubtful you’ll have any success there unless somebody changes their mind and moves out.

Cardinal Gardens is across the street, off campus, you may get in there but that was pretty popular too for those who didn’t get into Webb. Century is also across the street, just a tad over. Both complexes have apartment units.

My D lived in Webb this year & has really enjoyed the convenience & newness of everything having just been refurbished. Not sure how you can have these options, as most folks have to wait their turn in the lottery to get their assignment & it is generally an upperclassman dorm rather than for freshmen.

The room D was offered in Webb for next year was only for 2 people, so she declined & she & 3 friends will live in Cardinal Gardens instead, which they are happy with & it is quite close to Webb, as Sequoia indicated. Have not heard about the other places.

im looking at the arts and humanities residential college as one of my choices for housing. I heard that there is a supplement application that you have to fill out and you have to put it as your first choice. is this true? i cant seem to find the supplement application so if somebody could give me a link that would be great. and i was also wondering if you can put the arts and humanities as your 2nd choice instead of first?

if you want to join any special club/community where they require a supplemental, you HAVE to put it as your first choice…correct me if im wrong anyone

o and you can find the supplemental application on the housin app once you put down your top 5 choices. it will lead you to a page with all the supplementals and you choose which special interest you want to join

2 questions:
can anyone briefly talk about marks tower? location? socialness? condition of the building? is there an elevator?
b/c earlier in this thread, someone said marks tower was to be avoided…why is that??

and 2) if i did my housing app in early february, like feb. 5th, do i have a good chance of getting my first choice of housing?

yeahh im wonderin about the same thing. although me722 im pretty sure if you applied by feb 5 ur def gonna get it lmao. i doubt many ppl even did it until mid march. i applied on april 13 for new/north, does anyone think i will get it?

Marks Tower is a pretty decent building. It isn’t one of the newest ones, but it is still quite nice. Yes, there are elevators. The floors are separated by gender. One of the nice pluses of this building is that the floors are small (about 28 people), so you tend to form a closer bond with your floor. It is one of the older buildings, but the rooms are decently sized, and the lobby just got a plasma TV and new couches.
