@JBuck7 That would really make me reconsider going there because I’d have no idea where I’d live then. Would I have to pay more for off-campus housing? I thought everybody had a fair shot.
Off-campus housing in Columbus is usually substantially cheaper than OSU’s dorms. Priority for dorms is given to the freshman and sophomores that have to live on campus. The general policy seems to be that they’re not letting many people who aren’t required to live on campus (transfers and upperclassmen) live in dorms so they have enough beds for the people who ARE required to.
In regards to singles, Jones has most of them but pretty much every dorm that has doubles has a handful of singles in them. There still aren’t many though and I doubt any are reserved for freshman (like many doubles and quads are), so it’s really just wait and see if the sophomores take them all.
@Marakov29 Do you know how we’d go about procuring off-campus housing? Does the school set you up with that, or is it solely on you to find a place to live?
@Virgo25AD there is a database OSU has for off-campus housing! It’s the housing search. It should come up if you search it. But you should get a hold of Housing and ask what your options are as a transfer. The rumor is they are telling transfers they can’t guarantee them housing since they can barely fit all of the freshmen and sophomores. You aren’t the first transfer I’ve seen reconsider coming here due to the lack of housing. There’s also a subreddit for OSU that you can visit, since some people have been posting there about needing roommates.
@JBuck7 what are the odds of me getting a superdouble with a roommate in haverfield or halloran? Would it be more likely than getting a single?
Also in beds that are bunked on the fooornplan of dorms, can you in bunk those and loft them individually?
@erinivey13 I’m not positive, but you should definitely make the super-double your #1 choice if you’re absolutely certain that is what you want, as that’s going to give you the best odds. And as for de-bunking beds, that’s more of a question for Housing, unless someone else here knows the answer. My guess is no, seeing as how the dorms listed that have de-lofting/lofting available only mention single and double room sizes.
@JBuck7 alright thank you! And also, I submitted my acceptance fee in January but the girl I may room with did hers in march. Most likely I will get my contract before her. If I put her down as my roommate but she doesn’t send hers in until a few months later does that decrease our chances of getting the room we want? Or will it not matter because I sent mine in fast?
@erinivey13 I’ve seen it mentioned on this board that yes, that will decrease your chances of getting the room you want since she will get her housing contract much later. You should verify with Housing though as I’m not 100% sure, and I’m sure they’ve had this question asked before!
Ok so im not planning to commit until first week of April but I want to know when you guys think i’ll get my housing contract. The thing is I have my roommate picked already but she already committed (sent in acceptance fee) in January. She’ll obviously get her housing contract before me but do you guys think that if she requests me as her roommate that we’ll still be fine? we’re aiming for one of the new halls on North campus. And when do you guys think i’ll get my housing contract if i send my acceptance fee in the first week of April?
@simbuh I think you’ll be getting your housing contract very late, and will not have a good chance of getting a newer room.
Having lived in Jones, can you give any recommendations for selection of single room? If you could give your opinion regarding floors, higher floor vs. lower floor, view from window, rooms with better layout? Any problems with elevator? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@mcjca9718 if you’re a freshman, they have a freshmen floor that I believe is usually the 3rd floor, so you’ll most likely just be on that floor and not have a choice. All the rooms are the same layout, essentially, with just the bathroom being placed in a different corner of the room, or your closet is on a different wall. There is also a double on each floor, but those are a little larger. The double on my floor chose to loft both beds, place a futon underneath one, a desk underneath another, and still had room for the second desk up against another wall. There’s also the super-single, which is extremely hard to obtain.
If you’re a sophomore/upperclassmen, and quietness is your number one priority, you won’t want the freshmen floor. It’s still very quiet compared to most dorms on campus, but freshmen are usually more social, so this floor is the “loudest” floor in Jones (or, at least, it was when I was a freshman). But you can still be social on whatever floor you are! Lower floors are nice because you can just take the stairs to your floor, but the elevators aren’t bad. If I were to live there again, I’d probably want an upper floor facing north campus for the view.
@JBuck7 I’m a sophomore and trying to choose my room. I would like a room facing as you suggested on the front of Jones so it faces toward south campus. I cant find any info about room numbers. Can you tell me if there’s a system like odds or evens on a certain side? Thank you
@mcjca9718 Since you’re a sophomore you could just swipe in yourself and figure it out, just keep track of your orientation as you go up the stairs
@mcjca9718 there’s 3 wings on a floor in Jones (north, east, west), so even if all even rooms face one way and odds another in a certain wing, you could still end up in the north wing and have a window that doesn’t face either Lane or north campus.
@JBuck7 what dorms do you recommend for doubles? And super doubles for freshmen?
@erinivey13 I’d say 1. Has AC, 2. The area of campus you want to be on, and 3. Does not have a communal bathroom. You can look all of this up on the page Housing has about all of the dorms. I can’t really recommend doubles having never lived in one, but generally most people don’t want to live on west campus and Park-Strad/Smith-Steeb are the party dorms.
Has anyone received a housing contract yet?
Sophomores don’t start selecting their housing until March 20th, so I wouldn’t expect it until a bit after that.
