So guys, all who are planning to live on campus, and who have hopefully applied by now, which "residence halls" are you aiming to stay in?

My daughter and 5 of her friends that are going to UCF all put down Towers for Fall. They are mixed as to what they want for summer. My own daughter is between Nikes/Hercules/and Towers for summer. She wants to meet as many people as she can and was told that the suite style dorms are more social (easier to meet and greet). Plus, Nike and Hercules (alias academic village) is next to the outdoor pool and the rec center! That said, she is a really outgoing person (will start up a conversation in the elevator with anyone) so IMO she ought to stick with the Towers (so she can cook). Lake Claire is also open for summer and that is supposed to be very social and really close to classes but my daughter didn't really like the layout there. We toured Lake Claire during orientation last year and there were way too many people in the apartment at one time. It felt cramped for this reason. The cinderblock walls in the tiny bedrooms also felt "institutional" to her. Well, she has until March 1st to decide on her dorm preference for summer. She is prob going to random roommate. She wants to meet new people.

if i end up attending (im only even considering it b/c of national merit scholarship, my 1st choice is wasU) im goin for the honors dorms

I'm just back from picking up daughter after the first semester.

They are over in Libra and love it. Her roomate is great and the other two suitemates are great also, they do everything together. I had heard so many bad things about roomates, at least kin this case that is totally not true. The rooms are adequate and all 4 scare a common bathroom, but have seperate sinks in each of the rooms.

Yeah, I myself have signed up for the towers for fall '08. Anyone have any experience with these? How are they? Pros/Cons?

My S is in the Towers. He and his roommates love it. The only con he's found is that you have to sign for an 11 month contract, which makes it more expensive, especially if you know you won't be here for the summer. Except for that, The Towers has been great! He likes having the kitchen, as he doesn't use a meal plan. He likes grocery shopping and cooking instead of using the cafeteria -- too far away, and two of his roommates who do have a meal plan said it gets old after awhile. We'll see what they think after Knightro's opens up at the convo center. Much closer.

zebes

I debated doing the honors college housing in the Towers but decided the extra money wasn't worth it for me and that I want to meet people outside of Burnett, too.

I'm hoping I get Libra.

I'm in Lake Claire and absolutely love it! I am a very private person and really didn't want to share a room. I got stuck with some crappy roommates, quite honestly, though. One of them is responsible, another one thinks he is, and the last one is a slob. (the one that thinks he is responsible can be a slob too)

I have some friends in Nike, and it's pretty nice over there. I wouldn't mind it, except for the sharing a room thing. And, I think the floors there are linolium, Lake Clare is tile in the hall and kitchen, carpet in the bedrooms.

Never been in the towers.

when we visited last summer we didnt get to see a dorm inside..i have heard some of the dorms are like hotels? which ones fall into this category? we did get a chance to visit the rec center and it was impressive

The dorms that are most like "hotels" are the newer ones (Academic Village -which is comprised of Hercules and Nike, and the Towers apartments). There are no communal bathroom-type dorms at UCF. As a freshman, you can choose either a double in a suite (two double rooms that share a private bathroom...4 kids/per bathroom) in either Libra, Apollo (oldest but renovated) or Hercules/Nike, or a single bedroom in Lake Claire (Has a kitchen and common area/living room plus 4 small bedrooms with twin XL beds share two bathrooms - two kids to a bathroom) OR the newest apartment style dorm, The Towers. Most of the rooms for freshman in the Towers are 4 bedrooms with two bathrooms - two kids per bathroom) The single bedrooms in the Towers have FULL size beds (as opposed to twin XL that is everywhere else on campus). The Towers also has a limited number of 4 bed/4 bath -everyone gets a private bathroom apartments but usually they are for upperclassmen. Of the two apartment style dorms for Freshman (nike and hercules have apartments for upperclassmen), I have been told that Towers is more social than Lake Claire since each floor has a common hallway, laundry room and elevators. In Lake Claire you access each apartment from the outside and there are no elevators (so not as many opportunities to "run into" new people. On the housing website there are photos of each and every type of room and dorm at UCF. We saw ALL the dorms when we visited last June and the pictures are very accurate.

seiclan - thx how do you think they compare to the new dorms at FSU?

They are very different in room/bathroom layout and Wildwood/Degraff at FSU are much bigger (700 kids in Wildwood vs. 500 kids in each of the Towers. The dorms at UCF have more of a south Florida feel (Miami architecture vs new dorms at FSU are brick with northern feel to them). Room sizes are bigger at UCF. Really, you should go on the housing website:

UCF Housing and Residence Life | Our Communities

The links are all clickable. Go look at each of the choices.

Yesterday got a great brochure/pamphlet in the mail from UCF on housing. It had photos of all the dorms with the floorplans (with room measurements). It will definitely come in handy come March 1 (when we can enter/list dorm and roommate preferences on the housing website online).

Another comment about the Towers - they had lots of activities to get the kids out meeting each other, and it worked. Son is in Memphis now with 1 of his suitemates + 5 other new friends from the Towers that he's been hanging out with this semester.

This is probably the case with the other housing as well. As a mom, I've been really happy with how easy the school has made it for freshmen to meet people and get involved in activities that interest them.

hey nobody has said anything about Greek life. What about the frats and sororities. (I'm more interested in Frats since I'm a guy)

You should ask this in another thread. No one would think about Greek life in a thread about dorms.
