Dorms

I've found my roommate and have a good deal of the stuff that needs to be done, done, but I don't know which dorm is the best for a freshman. Could people say their personal favorite freshman dorm and why?

It depends on your preferences. If you want to meet more categories of people then Donlon is the place for you. If you want a single, you’ll probably wind up in Dickson. If you like newer amenities CKB may be nice. You don’t have total control over the selection process, though.

My daughter loved Donlon!

Most people that lived there do. It’s sure as hell a much more honest social environment than the dorm I live in now. Only one more month, though…

i don’t think we can choose a specific dorm. you can only say ‘residence hall’ in your preferences. you can specifically ask for a program house though.

the key to getting the best dorm for YOU is to answer the housing questions honestly - don’t put down what you think you want, put down what you actually want. It seems to work out…my S is in a low rise and even though those buildings aren’t what people on CC say you must have to be happy, he’s been very happy. His dorm-mates are great and his dorm isn’t party central. There are plenty of places for that, but when it’s snowing outside, it’s nice to know you can get work done in your dorm.

Donlon has an extremely quiet library/lounge where you can get tons of work done as well…

Unless you choose to live in a program house (such as Risley, the ecology house, Ujammaa, etc.) your freshman dorm is chosen at random. Don’t worry too much about which one you’ll end up in because the people who live around you usually make the dorm experience worthwhile. I could have lived anywhere on campus with the friends I met freshman year and we would have loved it but that’s because they made it awesome!

I don’t think any dorm is going to create anything but a good experience. I lived in CKB and yeah, it’s nice that they are newer, but that doesn’t mean all that much. Donlon tends to be more social because of its set-up, whereas the high/low rises are less so due to their set-ups, but really it comes down to the people you meet. Donlon/CKB will suck of the people randomly assigned to your floor are terrible, and Dickson can be the best fit if you end up meeting your best college friends there.
