Which Freshman Dorm Should I Pick at Cornell?

As a recruited athlete, I get placed in the dorm of my choice (by the coach). I plan to have a single. Which dorm is the best in terms of room size, niceness of the facility, etc. I am a girl but I am not a fan of Balch, would not be in a program house, I'm not into the appearance of the high rises, and Donlon is too loud for me probably. My favorites are basically just Dickson, CKB, and Mews. Which should I pick?

DO NOT PICK DICKSON.

CKB vs Mews is a toss-up, but CKB is five years newer and has an arch, so I would go with that.

Since CKB and Mews are both newer they are modern (both with AC I think?), clean and in great shape, which may be exactly what you want. Dickson is an older dorm.

You have likely already seen this link where you will find a panaroma view of the rooms (single, double, triple, suite) in each freshman dorm.

Good luck!

Norwegian prisons are nicer than Dickson…

CKB/Mews are roughly equivalent. Donlon tends to be the most social because its layout is conducive to social interaction (the high/low rises are the opposite). Everyone I know who lived in Balch enjoyed it; you’d likely have the biggest room there.

mews! if the weather’s bad you can get to appel and only have to walk outside for like 3 feet haha

What are Dickson singles like?

@Country20: I live in a single in Dickson. It does not have air conditioning, but each room has an individually controlled radiator. They are working on remodeling the restrooms (my restroom was new when I moved in). The dorm is in a good location in proximity both to dining and to the rest of campus. I think my room is fine (no frills but comfortable). Singles in Dickson are definitely larger than singles in the new buildings on west. Some rooms are slightly larger than others. I am on the 5th floor, and even though I have a sloped ceiling, it really doesn’t bother me too much. The way the halls are structured, people want to socialize in the hallways to make friends (though there is the option of having privacy when I want to). Overall, even though Dickson is one of the oldest dorms on North, I really like my room and am glad I got placed here.

^
I’m also on the fifth floor on the 5-side. Not sure if you’re male or female, but even if the bathrooms have been remodeled, they are still disgusting.

Location is not better than CKB’s in any respect.

The singles vary in size. If it’s one of those connected to another by a door, then they tend to be fairly large. Those are definitely a minority, though. Most of them are small (maybe 150 square feet) and barely enough space to comfortably fit stuff in.

I don’t really understand why the ceilings have slants. They’re annoying and take up a lot of space.

People socializing in the hallway are irritating during weekdays. It’s alright to talk, but some of the people are obnoxiously loud and it’s distracting. Sure, you can just go to the library, but that’s 15-20 minutes away. RPCC Lounges are a better option.

Dickson is still one of the nicer dorms overall, though, I think. Supposedly the low-rises are the worst.

My son is in Dickson, first floor, and loves it. In fact, I have used the bathroom and didn’t find it at all bad. Freshman we met last Spring, told him that they also loved Dickson. So, I guess it is up to the person. His room is very big. I understand bigger than most singles. Feel free to pm me.
