Anybody know what dorms at UTK are best? What's the chance of a freshman getting a single room?

I go to UT. I know people who have stayed in every dorm, so here’s a rundown:

Clement: It’s right next to The Strip, which is both good and bad. It has a POD inside, and you’ll learn to appreciate that. It has a nice basement area and computer lab. There is a parking garage a few feet away. Unfortunately, it is close to The Fort.

Gibbs: It houses athletes, which is cool if you’re into that. It is kind in a weird part of campus, though.

Hess: My personal favorite! The building is SUPER nice and fairly new. It’s right next to the library, and it’s probably the most conveniently located dorm. The only downside (or a plus) is that there are a LOT of people who like to party hard.

Humes/Reese: These two are my least favorite. There is only one elevator on each side, which is fine if you are going to the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd floor, but not so fine if you’re going to the 6th. It’s always dark inside. The ceilings are really low. A lot of sorority girls and frat guys live in Humes/Reese, which I’ll let you mull over whether or not you like that. Pres Court is a nice area to live, though.

Massey: It’s also close to The Strip. The courtyard is super pretty, and it has a huge POD store located by it. But, a girl I know who lives there said a homeless woman was in the bathroom a few days ago. So…yeah.

Morrill: Because it is the Honors dorm, it’s well taken care of. The lobby is nice, and the cafeteria food there is arguably better than the food at PCB.

North/South Carrick: Awesome lobby and basement, and there are multiple elevators. The walk isn’t the greatest if you have a class on The Hill, though. But, if you want to live in Pres Court, I would live here.

I’m not sure of the chance a freshman has of getting a single room. I know a freshman who pays for a double when he has a single room, simply because they ran out of double rooms and had an extra single. He lives in Hess. I know people who have roommates who moved out after one semester and now have a double room to themselves. Because upperclassmen picked housing before incoming freshmen, I don’t think the odds are in your favor, but it’s definitely not impossible. I hope I helped!

Pearlfiction: Thanks. What about Volunteer Hall?

You’re welcome! I LOVE Vol Hall, and I’ll explain why. ;)

Pros:
-HUGE rooms
-Convenient location (you can walk/bike to class, The Strip or downtown!)
-Beautiful patio
-Southern Kitchen, Dunkin Donuts, a POD store, and Quizno’s in the same building
-ATM (Suntrust)
-Doesn’t close during breaks

Cons:
-Because it’s popular, it’s hard to get a room!
-…You have an RA. ;)

Personally, if I had to pick one of UT’s apartment halls, I would definitely live here. Laurel is really nice too, but the location isn’t as convenient, it’s in The Fort, and a lot of robberies occur on that street. Oh, and mostly girls live in Laurel…I think they only recently opened it for guys. Andy Holt (“Apartment Residence”) would be my third choice…the location makes walking to class fairly annoying, and stupid/uncoordinated/drunk drivers tend to hit cars in the tiny parking lot.

Vol Hall, Laurel, and Andy Holt are only available if you are a sophomore, a freshman who has 30+ credit hours from AP and/or dual enrollment, or a freshman who has 30+ hours after their first semester at UT. I hope I helped! Feel free to ask me anything about UT, and I’ll try my best to answer. :)

Yes, pearfiction. You were very helpful. Thanks.

Actually I found out I am approved for a single room. It is very, very expensive and I worry I will be lonely without a roommate but I am afraid of the randomness of who I might draw to sleep next to me for the entire year. My dad had a bad experience with a roommate at UT; his roommate sold pot out of their dorm room to pay for school. There were pot seeds everywhere and he was afraid he’d get busted along with his roommate. (That didn’t happen but he still worried about it.) I know another girl who drew a roommate who “liked” other girls – not that there’s anything wrong with that – but often she had friends stay over all night…and that was really weird and awkward and uncomfortable for my friend. So I am glad all things considered I got the single. The housing web site said my assignment might change up until August 1 so I hope that doesn’t happen. Thank you for your information. It is great to hear from someone who has first hand knowledge. I am really looking forward to starting at UT – GO VOLS!
