Dorms!!!

i’m having trouble deciding. i know i definitely do NOT want warren or the towers. i’ve seen their rooms and it is so cramped. plus i like my peace and quiet. i think right now it’s between shelton or hojo. both have their pros and cons. i just can’t decide. help?

My first choice is the apartments...then the Hojo. Are u familiar w/ BU's Backdoor site?

the apartments? i don't think i'd like that...cuz i can't cook and be independent and stuff. anyways. yeah. i've seen the backdoor site. it's really nice, but doesn't help narrow down my choices!

Shelton has a dining hall and the HoJo doesn't. In the HoJo, you will be sharing a bathroom with 2 people, where as in Shelton you could be sharing with 3 or 4 people. In Shelton, you will be very VERY outnumbered by upperclassman. Many more freshman end up in HoJo, even though it is as quiet as Shelton. I hope this help a little. It is a tough decision. I'm living in Shelton next year as a Sophomore. I have a lot of friends who lived in Hojo as freshman, but I don't know any freshman who lived in Shelton. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I have a couple of friends actually that lived in Shelton this year and loved it. Their are definately only a handful of freshman who get housed there, especially for 2006-2007 school year, since Shelton is filled to capacity as of now. I would definately urge all freshman to pick a typical freshman dorm; at least for me, it was the easiest way to meet my best friends. Of course, if you love to meet new people, it would be no problem meeting others from your classes. Then again, theres summer orientation where many people meet life long friends. I guess I am trying to say, if its easy for you to meet new people, and you want a quiet dorm, go for shelton, or the hojo, or even something like a brownstone on bay state or south campus. If you have a tougher time meeting people, and dont mind a little noise in the hallway, def. go for a dorm like warren or west.

i think i'm going to go with hojo. is it possible to request a room without bunks? i should call them and tell them i'm afraid of heights or something.

jessli88: Hehe...give 'em a call, u never know...

haha, thats a good one. If you end up getting put in a bunked room, make sure to be there before your roomate does so you can get first dibs.

what about Myles?

Myles is a little different because of the layout. There are doubles in suites and singles in suites, each with their own restroom. If you get into a single in a suite, you obviously have your OWN room, and share a restroom with just 2 or 4 others, pretty awesome. There are even singles with a bathroom of their own, so you get the whole place to yourself. Of course, these are going to be harder to get.

GOBU: This may have been asked already, but do you think I have a good chance at getting into any of the brownstones? Here are my first three choices: Bay State Road, South Campus, and (for dorms) 575 Comm. Avenue. Do you know anybody who has been assigned to an apartment as a freshman? Also, if you know any, what are some advantages and disadvantages of living in an apartment?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

Hey Shiba411,
I do know a handful of freshman who got placed into brownstones on Bay State and South. Although the chances of this happening for a freshman are very slim, there is always a possibility. My friends who got placed there absolutely love it, but admit that it was harder for them to meet people because its so quiet in the brownstones and there are few 1st years. The advantages are quiet housing, great place to relax or take a nap after class without disruptions while some disadvantages that I can think of now are that you don't get the "typical" freshman experience of living in a huge dorm and meeting everyone on your floor. If you are fast to meet people, worry not though, because everyone will be wishing they lived where you do. And another advantage is during your housing selection for sophomore year, when everyone else is cranky about being stuck in the big dorms again, you should be happy about picking the same room for the next year.

Thanks a lot, GOBU! Making friends has always come easily to me, so it shouldn't be a problem. The brownstones sound great... I'll def keep my fingers crossed!

People always tend to give Warren and West a bad name, but for freshman, I really think they are the way to go. I love that everyone on my floor always leaves their doors open, that people are always in the common room, and that everyone knows everyone's names. We have a community, whereas people I know in "nicer" dorms don't know their neighbors' names, let alone their whole floor. All my friends are from my floor, and I can honestly say that even though I'm happy to be living in a bigger room next year, I am going to miss my freshman dorm!

I second that...I had the best time living in my "big dorm", but now it's simply time to move on. I made the best of friends, and now that everyone is moving into nicer places all around campus, it gives you an opportunity to explore, and even try the different dining halls haha.

ok. my list so far is...
1. Myles
2. Hojo
3. baystate
4. warren
5. towers
what do you guys think?

What are some of your preferences and I can tell which residence most fits you, like do you want to be around alot of freshman? Do you want something quiet or pretty social? Is it easy for you to make friends with anyone no matter their age etc.? Do you want apartment style or typical dorm style rooms your first year? Also, what school are you going into?

i want to be around a good number of freshmen, but i don't care if i'm around some upperclassmen. at least i want my roommates or suitmates to be freshmen. as for making friends, i'm not like really social, but i'm not really anti social either. so it depends. and i'd rather have dorm style cuz it's cheaper and it's easier to meet people.

These seem like very good choices then. In Myles, depending on what type of room you will be put in, you are sure to meet a good mix of both freshman and upperclassmen. Same goes for the Hojo. If you are put into The towers and warren, you are sure to meet many many people, mostly other freshman eager to meet. If you are put into baystate, it will be amazing to say the least, but it will require "a little" effort on your part to meet people. Good luck

What is the BU Backdoor site? How do I get there?
