One thing we did not see on our tour was the dorm situation. I have read that the Honors Program Dorm is nice but does anyone have comments on the regular admit student dorms?

Also, after reading the post about the campus being trashed by heavy drinking football fans (was it just alumni?), I am a little wary of how serious the general student body is toward academics. Any comments? Although you always have an element of party people, I was hoping that element would not dominate the campus. I would hate to have my kid be in that atmosphere. Fun is great, but I went to a school where there was too much of the drunken party stuff and it was not good.

True, on saturdays the campus is taken over by football fans but not every tailgate is an all out drunkfest. I see a lot of parents with their young kids here on saturdays. Although by sunday morning all of the trash is gone. Campus is very good about cleaning the whole place up quickly.

The freshmen high rises (Russell, Creswell) have probably the biggest party atmosphere, but at the same time i know people who don't party who just like being surrounded by a lot of people...it's a lot of fun. The Myers dorm is mainly filled by a lot of kids who don't do anything but play video games and study.

The main thing is though that the vast majority of people on this campus love to have a good time, but when its time to work they get their academics done. You may hear of athens being a party school (it is a lot of fun), but students are also doing their job in the classroom. its a great balance.

Space10045, since you seem to know a lot about UGA, can you shed some light on whether or not people leave campus on the weekends to go home? Also, any info about moving off campus after freshman year and how that effects social life and things of that nature?

Sorry it took awhile to answer but I don't check this board often. I'd say that the majority of people stay for the weekends there are a definite few that go home every weekend. BUT If you want to hang around there are ussually a lot of people still on campus. I'd say the only weekends where most people went home were like the first weekend w/o a football game, fall and thanksgiving break, and after exams.

I recommend using Freshman year to meet as many people as possible. A lot of people move off campus after freshman year and its still definitely possible to have a social life, but you need to make sure you have all those connections. It's definitely more difficult when you arn't living in the dorms.
