bokchoy - Terry/Lander do feel a bit further away from campus, but in actuality, Terry/Lander and Haggett/McCarty/McMahon are almost equidistant from Red Square. That said, it does feel different walking there through various streets (from Terry/Lander) vs. through the quad (from the North Campus dorms), surrounded by UW buildings. I’d say you do feel a bit further from campus living in Terry/Lander than the others, but as far as actual distances to classes and such, it’s probably a wash (for example, my first class has been in the physics building every quarter, which is < 5 minutes away, whereas it is 10+ from north campus dorms). This time last year, a lot of people on this forum warned me that Terry/Lander were almost “off campus,” but I decided I’d rather be in an environment with more underclassmen my first year, and the alleged distance from campus hasn’t really been a drawback of living in Terry/Lander this year. The bigger drag is being separated by a ten minute walk from friends in the North Campus dorm, but of course you would have the same issue living in North Campus with friends you meet who live on South Campus.

Unsure as to the actual statistics of triples in Terry vs. Lander. There are a lot in both Terry and Lander. If you’re really against living in a triple, Haggett is a sure bet for doubles, and I think* (but not sure) there are less in McCarty also? This is almost purely conjecture though.

iloveuw - I’m a short male with a mom who was at uw during the Ted Bundy days, so this is something that I was very worried about towards the beginning of the year. We do get uw alerts from time to time about people getting robbed on the ave at night, but walking through campus (red square, the quad, etc) is generally very safe. Mostly you just have to use common sense: try to walk in groups, be aware of your surroundings (don’t keep your head buried in your ipod), and avoid walking alone late at night. There are also other services uw offers at night in case you do need to get back to your dorm like nightwalk and a nightbus (although I forget what it is actually called). It is definitely something to keep in mind since Terry/Lander in a slightly more urban area than McMahon/etc, but not something that should keep you from living in Terry/Lander if it is otherwise appealing to you.

On the housing app, there are a few survey questions like, would you rather live in a double not in your top choice dorm than live in a triple in your top dorm choice (you get to rank your top four dorm choices), but otherwise there aren’t a lot of places to increase your odds of getting a double to my knowledge. Even requesting a specific roommate may get you a third roommate as well (one of my friends had this occur, although they’re all friends now).

I also enjoy the slightly longer walk to the “central” part of campus. It’s just a nice way to relax, take in your surroundings, and unwind.
