Which residence hall? Why??

Title is pretty self-explanatory.

If you know you will be attending UW for sure. If you have been accepted. Or if you are still debating schools. Whatever position you may be in as of now, which residence hall do you think you will choose (if you will be applying for housing, that is) when April 6 arrives? Why? Or better yet, if you already know which hall you want, which is it and why? Why not the others? :)

I am considering McCarty and McMahon because these dorms gave me the impression of having the more quieter atmospheres (than opposed to Lander/Terry). And because I would like to mainly focus on studies and create stable relationships with friends during my first year in college, I need a calm atmosphere. I haven't made my decision yet so I hope you're reasons will help me make one quick. Also, I hope this will serve as a reference for future UW applicants. Thanks in advance! ;)

Haggett, McCarty, or McMahon.

terry or lander. my 1st choice it undecided.
i also wanted a quite place to stay, but i disliked haggett for sure.
it was dull, ugly…just a place i know i won’t enjoy,…
i haven’t visited mccarty and mcmahon but buildings def look ugly, similar to haggett.
i had a better impression of terry and lander. loved their interior even though outside was so-so. most freshmen are here, and i plan on making a lot of new friends this coming fall, so it has to be one of the two dorms.

LNADER LANDER LANDER, you wont regret it

As a current student, I would recommend McCarty. But whatever you do, don’t get Mercer!! Hahaha, my friend calls it “not even worthy to be called a full sized dungeon.” :P

Hopefully McCarty for the Honors floor. I’m a more quiet type of person, so it would be nice if my ‘home environment’ was quiet too. Also, the engineering floor(s) are in McCarty, and I’d like to enter the College of Engineering. I’ve also heard great recommendations about it.

@xochistlahuaca - I’ve also heard terror stories about Mercer. I’m trying to stay away from there :)

@any current student - We’re supposed to apply for 3 dorms, right? I’m putting down McCarty (1), then Lander (2), then I’m not sure… Those first two were for the Honors floors, but after that, I’m not sure what to sign up for. Can I sign up for McCarty Non-Honors floor as an option? If I apply within a day of the housing app going online, would I most likely get my top choice?

Thank you guys for your contributions! I forgot to mention early that I’m also considering Hagget.

@mooper
My friend actually wants me to dorm with her at Lander but I am still reluctant towards her offer. The idea that it is an all freshman dorm (correct me if I’m wrong) is not totally appealing: it leads me to the idea that the dorm will be filled with parties 24/7. I am not so inclined to all the partying and rambunctiousness. She is a close friend though, so this will be hard for me.

Hey everyone! Okay so I’m a bit worried about the whole dorm thing too and I’m not really sure where to start. I’ve been reading all the threads on here to get an idea, but still…have any of you visited the dorms? I haven’t yet and I think maybe I should so I can kinda get a feel for them.

@ BubbleTeaChibi - Is McCarty one of the dorms that has ‘clusters’? I’m more of a quiet person as well so I was thinking I’d like it better there. I’m guessing you got into honors since you mentioned the floor (yes?) - congrats!!! :slight_smile: I got in too and I’m so excited about it!! Have you heard anything about what honors floors are like? (Sorry about all the questions!)

Honestly pumpkins, ask for Mccarty. It’s the best dorm, close to the cafeteria in mcmahon, has Ian’s domain in the basement, which is a Godsend, is closest dorm to U-Village (awesome), super close to the IMA and husky stadium, super close to tennis courts and denny field, super close to the greek system (if you like to party), close to the quad and red square, etc; what more can you ask for? Plus, it’s quiet and the rooms are reasonably sized.

Of course, it depends on what your looking for and what kind of person you are.

Lander/Terry = party with other freshman
McMahon = if you want to be a recluse in your cluster with people you dont know and hardly see and get fat from being 50 steps away from a very accessible cafeteria
Hagget = have a nice view of the water but don’t want to be in McMahon or McCarty because you’re afraid you’ll gain the freshman 15 from going to The 8 and Ian’s Domain so often (you will)
McCarty = super balanced, has ping pong, pool tables on the first floor, a movie renting kiosk, Ian’s domain, proximity to the rest of campus etc;
Steven’s court = if you like hiking miles to class every day
Mercer = uhh. no.
Hansee = Really good and really quiet I actually heard, pretty awesome rooms, a good little interhouse community develops pretty quickly.
Nordheim = super far away, but more independent if that’s your thing. UW HFS owned apartments. Bus routes take you up to campus in less than 5 minutes so you don’t have to scale the huge hill.

p.s. I stayed in McMahon and almost became depressed my freshman year for many reasons, plus I gained the freshman 15. Don’t stay in Mcmahon unless you know the people you will be in a cluster with. If you can request a group of roommates, it’ll be super fun.

Let’s see, Haggett is closer to: 1) the cafeteria in McMahon, 2) IMA, 3) Husky Stadium, 4) quad, 5) red square. and i would argue it’s an easier walk to U Village from haggett.

Haggett and McCarty are literally right next to each other, if you didn’t know. It goes Mcmahon, Haggett, McCarty from south to north. I’m not discriminating distance on literally 10-20 steps. All I’m saying is that McCarty is a great dorm and, based on experience, I’d pick it again if I were to do re-enroll as a freshman.

^I live there, I know.

haha. mahaffie, your descriptions of the dorms were funny and very helpful. Thank you so much, I think I may have been convinced to put McCarty as my first choice and bump down McMahon to third… Or maybe even kick it off my list (that is, if what you said is mostly true because i do not want to be a recluse, I want to get to know people!) Thanks mahaffie and spaceneedle. Im seriously considering Hagget as well. ;)

To all: I would really like to visit both Hagget and McCarty but I am not available during the tour times so I take what you guys say seriously as if I had seen the dorms firsthand. Thanks for your contributions once again. :)

They don’t let you see the dorms during the campus tour anyways, so no loss there.

Any thoughts on which residence hall is best for an engineering major (as in classes aren’t too far, etc)? Also it seems a lot of people are favoring either McCarty, McMahon, Hagget, or Lander.

McCarty does sound ideal though with the Internet Cafe :]

I am a pre-science major-focusing on biology. So in that aspect, which dorm would be most convenient (as in close proximity)?

Also, has anyone applied for housing yet?

you can’t apply for it right now

I’m also curious from pumpkin’s question! =O

Also, I’ll just leave this here [Campus living, dorm by dorm - The Daily of the University of Washington](http://dailyuw.com/2009/5/13/campus-living-dorm-dorm/)

To the person who asked about engineering, there’s both an honors and engineering floor in McCarty if I’m not mistaken. To be sure, maybe spaceneedle can answer that, I think he lives there. However, if you want a general idea of where the engineering buildings are, take a look at the map I posted below, all of the engineering buildings are oriented to the right of Drumheller fountain (the light blue circle). I believe Mech. E, Civil E, Chem E, and Electrical E. are clustered to the right. That means that they’re equally as far away from Mercer and Stevens (the crappy dorms) and Mccarty, McMahon and Haggett, so really it just depends on which dorm you prefer, there’s no real advantage, in terms of distance, between any of the dorms and the Eng. buildings.

To the person wondering about Bio, your classes will probably be in Hitchcock later in the major. Earlier classes will most likely be in Kane or somewhere closer to campus. You probably have access to one of the UW maps on washington.edu, but if you don’t, here’s one, with the dorms and Hitchcock highlighted. Hitchcock is at the ass-end of campus, and in this case, mercer and steven’s court are the closest dorms. McMahon, Mccarty and Haggett are in the upper right hand corner, and probably about a 20-25 minute walk away. If you’re absolutely sure you wanna do Biology, then those are the dorms. Although your first year, it most likely will not matter as you’ll be stuck taking Gen Eds. and pre-reqs, which are usually taught in Kane, in the middle of campus. Maybe your second year too, depending on how you decide to tackle the major.
