Hello everyone,

This is my first post an I am interested in double majoring in economics and media studies. I want get an MBA in the future. Hopefully from top business schools (stanford, columbia, northwestern). I would like to work in the business side of the entertainment industry, specifically marketing or advertising.

So I have a couple of questions:

Is it worth double majoring in economics and media studies? (From a B- School's perspective)

Will majoring in media studies alone hinder my chances of going to a top B-School and getting a marketing job in the entertainment industry?

Will double majoring with these majors be to difficult, TOO time consuming, significantly drop my gpa, and kill my social life?

Will an economics major alone still allow me to get internships/jobs on marketing?

(So overall, getting an MBA is what I am striving for) Thanks!

I don’t get it… does that mean it’s easy or…

Have you considered doubling with media studies and Haas, and having media studies and econ as a back-up? That way, you’d gain some of the business knowledge you’d need to make the MBA less necessary (at least from a skill set point of view since a huge part of an MBA is the connections). I wouldn’t strive for an MBA this early on; rather, I’d focus on getting quality internships by expanding your network (business is based on connections, and the entertainment industry is a sub-set of business that is especially based on them).

I’d use the perspective, in terms of deciding what to double major in, of whether or not you’re interested in the subjects and whether or not you think they’ll benefit you in terms of gaining internships/jobs, not how business schools will view them (since they prefer work experience anyway).

I’d say that, for the industry you’re interested in, it doesn’t matter too much what majors you have - most of it comes down to your ability to sell your skills to and network with the right people. That being said, I’d strongly consider pairing a pseudo-technical major (Haas, econ) with a non-technical major (media studies, psych) to make yourself well-rounded.

To directly answer all of your questions:

From a business school’s perspective, they could care less.

Media studies alone won’t hinder your chances of getting into an MBA program. It may have some impact on getting internships/jobs, and having Haas/econ would be a good, but not absolutely necessary, component to have.

It depends on how studious/smart you are, but probably not.

I’d say you’re better off getting jobs/internships in what you want with just econ relative to just media studies, but both scenarios are less important than having any degree at all and a good network/LinkedIn/skills/knowledge of industry.

Thank you for your quick reply! Yes, I have definitely thought about Haas instead of Econ but I really am interested in what Econ has to offer. Plus, Haas doesn’t accept that many people. I’ve heard that Business schools like to see a wide range of studies, so that’s why I may stick to media studies. I am genuinely interested in media studies too :). And yes, internships are important and hopefully I can get serious internships!
Thanks again!
