Is it possible to double major in international relations and computer science at GWU? Would this be very difficult to do? I would like to still have the opportunity to study abroad. Also, would I be able to use AP Credit for Calc I and still get admitted for a second major in computer science?
Double-majoring will be determined by a few factors. First, whether the second school accepts you (I believe you only get accepted to one when you first apply to GW); second, whether there is enough overlap in required classes for the major. If you have too many different requirements you’ll either have to take loaded semesters for 4 years or you’ll have to take longer than 4 years. This will obviously depend on each program and how many required classes their are. I can’t speak for either international relations or comp sci, but you can get an idea by going to the University Bulletin for each program and seeing how many required classes there are:
Elliot School, International Affairs http://bulletin.gwu.edu/international-affairs/undergraduate-programs/ba-international-affairs/#generalrequirementstext
School of Engineering, Computer Science http://bulletin.gwu.edu/engineering-applied-science/computer-science/bs/#requirementstext
Ideally this is done with an adviser, but if you want an idea: add all the required classes from each major together and remove anything that overlaps (electives, broad terms like ‘science classes’ or ‘humanities’). Once you have a final number, divide it by 8 (number of semesters in 4 years, not counting summer classes) and that’ll give you an idea of how many classes you’ll have to take per semester. Depending on how many credits each class is, I’d say more than 5 or 6 classes per semester would be incredibly difficult.
Good luck, and I hope I was at least somewhat clear
thanks NHuffer, that was helpful
Is there anyone here in either major that can tell me about the second major BA in Computer Science? I see that it has almost no math classes, so will I still be able to apply for an MS if I take it? Also, do employers still hire graduates with a BA instead of BS in compsci?
