Double Majoring as a Transfer Student

Title pretty much says it all. Can transfer students double major and how exactly does it work out?

Sure you can but you have to apply as only major. Once you get in and have stayed for at least a quarter or semester, you fill out a petition form telling the school what you intend to do joint major in.

The schools look at a lot of things before approving the petition such as current and recent GPA, curriculum of schedule (planned) and timing, EC’s, etc. Keep in mind though, students do get rejected from double majoring. I’ve seen it happen more than once too…

You can definately do it but,

A. You won’t have a social life
B. You’ll need to take ~ 20 units a semester to graduate “on time” or 16 if you want to do it in 3 years
C. Make sure if you double major in somewhat related fields ala Math/Econ, Math/Engineering, Econ/Accounting, etc So your lower division pre-req courses can semi overlap

that is not true. i’m double majoring in applied mathematics and economics and i have plenty of free time. I could graduate a semester early if i wanted to but i’m taking a bunch of elective courses. Also, i’ve never had take more than 16 units. It was actually a fairly simple process to petition the double major. They don’t really care about your gpa as long as its above a 2.0 for uncapped majors.

Indeed, it’s perfectly possible to double major and graduate on time. Several scenarios: 2 low-unit majors, 2 majors with a good amount of class overlap, use of summer sessions and taking on a difficult workload if not one of the prior. Computer science and biochemistry would be difficult as they are high-unit majors with little class overlap. English and philosophy would be an example of relatively low-unit majors. By the way, I am making the assumption that the IGETC is completed so that most, if not all, of the general education classes are out of the way.

Personally I’m thinking of majoring in political science and thinking about double majoring in political economy or normal economics when I get in. Comments?

@jet
did u ever take summer session/winter session?

@op
check out the college u wanna attend and see if you can knock out lower div early on. like at ucsd, the lower div communication classes must be taken there and these are offered in the summer

It’s very important to complete all pre-reqs for both majors before you transfer, that way you can jump right into your upper division major requirements.

Say if you were doing poli-sci and psychology, you WILL graduate on time taking 4 courses each quarter, 2 of them being psych and the other 2 being poli-sci.

Cool, I will have my lower division pre-reqs for both Poli-Sci and Econ done by this quarter :)
