Double majoring in Economics and Music... what are my chances for these schools?

Hello everyone,

I will be looking to seek a dual degree or a double major option in economics along with music perf/ed if possible (in this crazy competitive world of music, it’s smart to seek out that option in my opinion… although some would disagree). So first step is to apply for the school and get in academically, as well as get in by audition.

I am looking to be chanced on getting in to John Hopkins, Northwestern, U of Rochester, and U of Michigan (academically). Thanks!

UWGPA: 3.7
Class Rank: Top 5% (competitive school in the top 10-15%… has kids going to ivies, stanford, duke, etc.)

SAT I: 2240 (1510 Math + CR)
SAT II: 800 Math Level 2… taking USH and possibly chemistry this october
Courses: 7 APs through the last 3 years… will take 4 senior year.

Race: Asian
Location: Southeast USA

EC: Plenty of musical activities (obviously), marching band captain, officer in NHS… I’m also really knowledgeable about pro sports (I’m in discussion forums and things like that). I also volunteer for a after school tutoring center and have accumulated 100+ hours.

Thanks everybody! This is a crazy process for someone like me.

PS. I would be applying RD to every one of these schools.

For music major, the admission is largely depending on your audition as long as your GPA and test scores meet their minimal requirement. Your test score is within the admission range for these schools and mostly above admission average while your GPA is a little bit low. Your class rank may help though. For UMich, if you get accepted by the Music school, adding a second major is not that difficult. While admitting by UMich LSA from OOS may be challenging partly due to the GPA and mostly the low OOS admission rate.

Thanks! I always thought that if you were going to tack on a major from outside the music school though, you had to be accepted into that school too (at NU, Weinberg in addition to Bienen). That’s what worries me.

For UMich, once you are admitted, it is actually easy to transfer internally or double major across the campus particularly when you are looking at LSA.

Bump! Want some more thoughts.

@billcsho thanks! Michigan is one of the schools i’m looking at due to how well rounded the school is in terms of academics and music.

Note that Music school admission is mainly by audition. So you need to be first admitted before considering other major. If music school is essential to you, then you should take this route. I know several students who did double major in music with something else (engineering or science) at UMich in the past.
