Double Majors

How diffucult is it to double major at Smith? I know I want to major in Neuroscience, but the comparative literature major seems irrisitable. Is it possible to double major in these two subjects? If so, could I also minor in either latin or east asian languages? There are so many courses I am interested in taking, and so many areas I'd like to focus on! I just don't know how much I'll be able too fit into my schedule.

Easy, easy. Take a deep breath.

Very easy to double major at Smith, just plan very carefully! In your first semester, take GLT 291 with Maria Banerjee (the basis of the Comp Lit major and also an excellent course with a sweetheart genius), take a language (Latin, Japanese, Chinese, or Korean), take a bio or chem courses as they are the basis of Neuroscience, and finally, pick a writing intensive course to get it over with as it is the only graduation requirement.

That way, you can see if you like the courses enough to continue for your sophomore year or not. Try to take something else in the spring just to make sure. I first came here wanting to minor in IR, then I waited until spring to take GOV 241 (with a better prof) which is the basis for the minor... god, I'm sooo glad that I did that because now I don't want to do it anymore!!! I wasn't sure if I wanted to be a Jewish Studies minor but after taking JUD 187, (the basis) I definitely want to minor in it! So now I'm re-doing my course plan because of this :)

So take everything you want in the first year and then things will fall in place for your sophomore year. Unless you know that you really want to be a pre-med... then it'd be tough to double-major...

and to answer one of your questions, you must have one major. in addition, you MAY (but don't have to) choose a second major OR a minor. But not both. And you can't declare more than one minor, although if you completed the requirements for an additional one I suppose you could say that on your resume/grad school apps.

How about if you wanted to double major in English Literature and Chemistry? And does Smith take credits from a community college? (i.e. classes like organic chemistry, microbiology, psychology)
Thanks for all the info so far!

Yes as long the classes are actually taught at the CC, by the professor and with other CC students. Not in a high school setting by a high school teacher and with other high school students.

I wasted that $109 for Econ for nothing (dual credit).

The essential problem is that there are enough interesting classes that you could spend 8-10 years at Smith and you have to whittle down the number of classes/majors so that you can graduate in 4 years instead.

D is double majoring and also gunning for Latin honors, which is fairly common, I gather. Her four-year schedule is currently put together like the proverbial Swiss watch.
