I was thinking of double spacing the short answers to make it easier for them to read, and to fill up more space on the page (I'm giving each short answer 1 page each). What do you guys think? Should I double space the personal statement as well?

I suggest you double space everything for uniformity's sake, and to make their reading easier. Easier = good. About trying to fill the page, though, I suggest you avoid this tactic, because seeing a page-long essay that is only supposed to be a paragraph or two will be off-putting. You are better off just following the word limits (250 for the short essays and the summer essay; 500 for the ONE long essay; and optional but reasonable length for the optional essay). Most importantly, IMHO, is to follow their instructions. Some people wrote over the limit and were accepted ED, but others were not, so just avoid the risk.

I agree with uniformity, but isn't 250 words more or less a double spaced page (with default Word margins and title)?

I 1.5 spaced all my essays. Made it easier to read and didn't take up too much paper.

Yeah I was wondering about uniformity too. I think I'll play with the formatting and see which one works best.

gianievve: I think you misunderstood me. When I meant filling up the page, I meant to do it by double spacing my 250 word essays because like cevonia said, it is more or less a double spaced page which default settings. All my essays are within 5-10 words of the limits :)

no athlonmj, i understood what you were saying. what i meant was: more spaced doesn't necesarily = better. my essays were barely over the limits by more than 10 words, i double spaced and used standard classical font, but the 250 word essay was hardly one page. shrugs do what you think is best.

edit: 1.5 spacing sounds like a reasonable compromise

I read in one of those "A is for Admissions"-type books that essays should be single spaced....but who knows. I doubt it will affect your decision too much regardless.
