I’m wondering if I should ask my math teacher if I can double up and take honors algebra ll and honors geometry. I know for sure I am doubling up and that I’ll take honors geometry, but as of now I don’t know about doing honors algebra ll as well. I’ve never really studied for math except for in pre-algebra (My pre-algebra teacher didn’t teach well, and I got A- averages even when I studied). In algebra 1 (my school doesn’t offer honors algebra 1 because of common core) for my first semester I got a 95-96 average with barley any studying. Math comes easy to me, and it’s my favorite subject. I’m a little bit nervous to ask my teacher though, because I’m already doubling up anyway, and I’m afraid that my math teacher will think it’s too much (I’m taking honors classes in every subject and a AP class) so what do you think? If I should ask, how should I go about asking?
Also, I’m not sure if I want to take dual enrollment U.S. history for one semester (collage class), AP U.S. history (collage class), or just regular history. I can’t take just honors because of my schedule, and I was recommended for AP U.S., but I don’t know if all of the extra time on hw is worth is persay. I want to major in STEM areas. I also want to get a full ride scholarship to a good school, because my family has a low income and I’m nervous about how I’m going to pay for everything.
This is my schedule for sophomore year core classes:
Honors English
Honors Biology
Honors Geometry
Algebra ll (Honors?)
U.S. History (not sure if I’m taking AP, dual enrollment, or just regular history)
AP Computer Science
For math, I found both subjects easy. I would say go for it. I took H Geometry as a freshman and got an A with zero efford. I’m now in H Algebra 2 and APUSH and I have an A- and a B+. APUSH, for my school, is a lot of work but easy material to understand. Again I put very little effort in Algebra (I do the homework but that’s about it). And I’m definitely not a math person (27 on math section of ACT). I would go
Honors English
Honors Biology (this class requires a lot of studying btw)
Honors Geometry
Honors Algebra 2
APUSH
AP Computer Science
That study hall will help with having time to get the work done.
Geometry can become taxing, with all of the rules and proofs to work through. Algebra 2 has a couple of conceptual hurdles, but is pretty straightforward. I’d more recommend taking honors geometry, seeing if you can double up on Algebra 2 and Pre-calc junior year, and trying your hand at self-studying Algebra 2 over sophomore. If you pass out for Junior year, then that’s just icing on the cake!
Where’s your foreign language class? (it’s considered a core class for college and very selective universities want to see up to level 4 or AP, selective universities want to see 3 years).
If you’ve been selected for APUSH, go for it. But ask your GC what the policy is about “dropping down” if you find it too hard.
If you takes Honors Algebra2+HOnors Geometry (and, if you double up, you should take them both as Honors), what’s your end game? What classes would you take junior and senior year?
Or could you take Geometry over the summer, and simply Algebra2 during the year?
I want to become a engineer or go into some heavy science/math fields. The only reason why my teacher told me I should double up instead of doing geometry over the summer is because I’ll get more in depth with geometry during the school year, and my teacher knows I want to do heavy science/math majors.
At my school, the track is:
Algebra l
Geometry
Algebra ll
Pre-calc
AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus BC
*You can take AP stats too anytime after you finish Algebra ll.
My plan is I double up in honors sophomore year so I can get to AP calc AB. My junior year, I plan to also double up and take honors pre-calc and AP stats.
Two of mine doubled up Maths on the block system. Not only did it allow them to take AP Calc, but it makes sure you are doing a Math every semester. I’d recommend it.
