downside to attending a public school?

are there any negatives to attending a public university. does unc have enough funding is there a difference from attending a public school?

I think that there are disadvantages to any average public school: larger classes, more people, worse dorms, worse food, larger school, more of a party scene (which could be an advantage), most people are from the same state

But keep in mind that UNC is one of the best public schools. It is not an average public school. The food is decent, the dorms aren't so bad, there are a lot of small classes, the campus is gorgeous, the people are friendly, and UNC promotes diversity. Also, it is a lot more expensive to attend a private school.

thanks margsala

also are students at unc generally conservative or is there a mix?

yeah class sizes actually arent that bad at UNC, and i heard also that the food is pretty good. 16,000 undergrads actually isnt that big of a number if you compare it to places like Minnesota-twin cities or UCLA (dont they have like 25000 or something?) the campus is very neat and looks beautiful, but i havent seen the dorms so i cant comment on that lol.

carolina definitely promotes diversity, so even though over 80% are from NC, i havent heard many complaints about it. the campus is generally liberal from what people tell me.

and it also has the #1 study abroad program out of all public schools and many students choose to study abroad, so im sure funding is NOT a problem. big schools=big resources =]

nomoresats,

students at UNC are generally pretty liberal. there's definitely a conservative voice, but it's mostly a liberal haven in a conservative state.

class sizes really aren't bad at all. in the classes where it's necessary to have a small number, there are.

for example, in my english class, there's only about 20 students. in french, there's only about 15 or so.

science classes tend to be pretty big, but i think math classes are usually pretty small.

oh boy. i just got in as well, and I am the president of our school's young republican club. :p

i might go crazy with all those liberals...

maybe you'll go over to the good side =]

"I am the president of our school's young republican club" "maybe you'll go over to the good side =]" lol u guys

thanks for responding, its good to hear positives responses, i really like unc but im still sort of apprehensive about going to a public university.

and can anyone tell me how the jobs placement/internships are. im thinking about going to kenan flagler or majoring in journalism.

duude the raleigh-durham-chapel hill triangle is ranked #2 for best jobs for business, there are loads of fortune 500 companies there

as for journalism, its still a pretty good location, although obviously its not the same as in a big city. you cant go wrong with either major, considering carolina is ranked top 5 for both business and journalism
