Downward fluctuations

I've seen plenty of threads on here about upward grade trends. Surely there is plenty of encouraging things to be said about how they factor in during the admissions process.

Unfortunately for me my first year at a CCC saw nothing but A's. My fall semester of my second year also continued this trend. My spring semester did not. Due to bad judgment I allowed myself to earn a B and a C (not in pre-req classes).

This Fall is devoted to getting back to the high standard of excellence I maintained before. My question is, how will this reflect on my application? Also, is it important to make note of this in my personal statement?

^I believe those are called “**** happens” and if you continue your regular grade trend, are looked upon as such.

I think a lot of downward/upward trends have something to do with the classes taken - eg, an engineering major taking harder prereqs that year than the year before.

Of course, personal issues can cause a heck of a lot of damage (usually more!) to your GPA than that.

Exactly, don’t beat yourself up over them, it’s a B and a C, not like it’s a D and an F. Another thing, I know it’s the “responsible” thing, but it irks me to no end when people say they “allowed themselves” to do it. I don’t think saying that sort of thing is necessarily more mature, stuff happens, it’s not always your fault, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. Slacking off and not studying is allowing yourself to do this, having a nasty fight with your sig other the night before the final and blowing it because of depression, dropping your perfect A to a B or a C is “stuff happens” and is mostly out of your hands. Those college prep classes always say the “be here now” method works, it doesn’t always.

So…bottom line, you aren’t screwed, even if they were a D and an F and you had to retake them you wouldn’t be screwed, and lighten up on yourself a little. Just because some of us have to schvitz to get our GPAs back to 3.7 range doesn’t mean you need to schvitz so hard just trying to keep it up at a 4.0, relax and permit yourself to not always be Mr. 100%. Getting a B isn’t death, so relax on yourself.
