Dress Scene at Yale?

What's the dress scene like at Yale?

Two extremes (primarily..of course you get a little of everything)

But there were the hipsters and then the J. Crew catalogue emblems.

I think the important thing though, was that there just wasn't any ONE overwhelming culture. It seemed like a bunch of people being who they were comfortable being and not caring if it was what others were doing. Everyone just seemed genuinely comfortable in their skin (which was sort of exemplified through their dress, their body language, etc)

most males wear knee-low jeans, allowing the undies to show, along with long plain white t-shirts and a fair amount of bling

^ lmfao 10char

When I visited, it was pretty hipster. That excites me!

there's not really a major style here. there's an urban outfitters and a j.crew on campus so you will see a lot of those styles but most people just wear whatever lol. it's not a big deal at all.

Urban Outfitters is the proverbial $hiite.
...although way expensive.

j crew is too expensive for me :(((

^ dude, that's why you hit up the outlet mall on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving).

I bought a $200 vest for $10 and a $50 signature D-ring belt for $2.

Just shop smart ;)

I would definitely be on the Urban side of things, not the J. Crew side (although my best friend is a cable knit sweater, polo, vera bradley wearing fiend so I do have a soft spot in my heart for that style, even though it's not at all me)

^ haha same, man! My best friend is an ultra-prep (Costa del Mar glasses with a VV croakie...Brooks Brothers out the freakin' wazoo...$500 belt buckle...Rolex....), and I'm sort of an amalgamation of a hipster and a prep, so it's pretty funny when we're together lol

What stores are there around Yale? Do a lot of ppl go to other places (NY, Boston) to shop..?

Definitely not J. Crew myself.

lol...what's j. crew? I've never heard of it.

I'm from West Coast. So different. Urban Outfitters has a thing with the liberal community, but it's mainly like...Abercrombie, American Eagle, Banana Republic, Hollister, that stuff. Especially on the UW scene.

J.Crew - Cashmere, Sweaters, Women's Clothing & Wedding Dresses, Children's Clothing, Men's Clothing & More
^Peruse it if you like. It's very classic New England prep style.

Yale has an Urban on the main street in the cute part of New Haven, but besides that I didn't see anything that was a recognizable chain in the area. A lot of really cute boutiques and trendy privately owned stores in the area (all of which I wanted shop at when I was there!)

Hookem: Your dress sense sounds really similar to mine! I'm such a clash between mild prep and full on liberal hipster. I don't like...wear the stuff at the same time but one day I could be decked out in a cable knit sweater with a collared shirt underneath and the next I could wear a little black dress from Forever 21, a big scarf, and astonishingly bright yellow tights. It's all good..:)

^ I think we're just cool like that :)

As a guy, I think the best evidence of my weird clothing sense is the outfit I'm wearing right now: A shirt and tie with a black sweater with Rock and Republic jeans + black Chucks + scarf

:D

Hmm...very dressy. That would be considered like...elitist style from where I come from.

I don't even know what you guys know by the term "hipster". lol...and I'm sure our "preps" are different too.

...I really don't pay that much attention to what I wear. I mean, I usually attempt to match, and to not look like I live under a rock, but most of my clothes come from the clearance racks of Kohl's. Will Yalies make fun of me? :(

Echo, neither Abercrombie nor Hollister is "prep" at all. Not even close. I live in Texas, for crying out loud, and even here people deem kids who wear that stuff as "posers."

Hipster is relatively close to Whitebelts. It typically refers to people who are quite fashionable in an avant-garde kind of way. Imagine fedoras, scarves, v-neck shirts, etc.

oh, and if you think J.CREW is "elitist," wait 'til you see the giant J.PRESS store on campus (it was actually founded at Yale, for Yale undergrads.)

J.Press : Home

Seriously? Get a life and lose some of your faux self-important insecurities. It's really not about being a clone of upward-mobility wannabe-ness. And I thought the Gossip Girl thread was shallow--but at least more pertinent than this. Go to USC.

To the kid who shops at the Kohl's blowout sales. You got it right! To the rest of you, spend your trust funds on pimpin' your brain. Lasts longer and you won't look like a loser 5 minutes after the new seasons' lines premiere.
