Jolynne, I don’t see any images! Just a calendar and lists of brands. What am I doing wrong?

Speaking of pashminas and scarves, anyone know how to tie them so they look cool and stylish, not fiddly and ridiculous, like mine usually do? Is there a scarf-tying website somewhere for the scarf-challenged like me?

canamdance, try searching YouTube for scarf tying videos.

hmm mafool…not sure why?

Re: scarves – good tip, PAckmom, re: youtube. That’s what my son’s friends did when they gathered at our house before graduation (all clustered around the computer monitor, watching ‘how to tie a tie’ on youtube, lol).

My friend had a scarf/mini-pashima tied low over a plain shirt today. It looked great! I think because it was white & not as bulky as a full-sized pashima. I’m definitely co-oping that look & going to pick up some in a few colors. It really adds style to absolutely any outfit!

^^And don’t forget that scarves hide neck imperfections really well :)

Yup, my H watches that tie video occasionally…

(Jolynne, I might have to wear my new stylish running tights to our Nordstrom Rack outing - they cost me more than the leather pants )

That’s it in a nutshell, the key to looking good is to not look like you’re trying too hard–not fiddly and ridiculous! Sorry, I don’t have any tips, but I’ve noticed that the times that my scarf (or hair) has looked the best is when I have just thrown it on (or tied it up) quickly without a mirror. I catch my reflection somewhere while I’m out and think, hmm, how did I do that? Then if I try to get it again, I never can.

That’s true, mousegray…especially for pony-tails, for me. Teens wear that ‘messy pony’ look & I only achieve that inadvertently!

Bunsen – that is really the only thing I spring any kind of $ for – running gear. I’ll lay out $90 for running shoes, & it’s $ well-spent. Bet the tights are great!

My hub got me an expensive underarmor turtle-neck for running one year for Christmas – the thing was, it was so slippery that I felt cold when I put it on. Plus the snugness was not comfy (maybe too small…). I bet there are brands of tights/shirts that feel great, though! What brand was yours?

If I want to feel fat, I try on an underarmor running shirt. They are cut so slim thru the body. Nike or Addidias or Moving Comfort are a much better fit.

I watched the youtube video, but I still don’t look quite put together. I am going to practice because BB is right about hiding those neck imperfections!!! I do think we will look back at this time in fashion and think it is funny how everyone was wearing scarves, regardless of the temperature. When I dropped DD off at school this fall, it was at least 80 degrees, and a lot of girls were walking around with scarves artfully draped around their neck.

And my daughter thought the leg warmers of the 80’s were ridiculous.

workinprogress, my D begged me to buy her legwarmers at the American Apparel store. I thought she was looking for a gag gift for someone, but she actually wears them - yikes! Legwarmers come and go, but scarves are classic!

Jolynne, the helpful posters who replied to my pleas for help on my running gear thread recommended these: [CW-X Insulator Stabilyx Tight](<a href=“Cw x insulator stabilyx tight black blue cw x + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Cw x insulator stabilyx tight black blue + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com) Fastest shopping I ever done I will let everyone know how they feel when I recieve them tomorrow. I can’t stand Underarmor either. I run in my old ratty Nike shirts or in my skiing Helly Hanson “liners” (I can’t care less if these are considered underwear).

Back to high couture - I’m taking my RL black dress back to Macy’s. When going through my closet tonight, I “discovered” the little black dress that I bought 6 (!!!) years ago and have never worn because I could not fit into it perfectly. Now the dress fits as if it was custom-made for me.

Thanks for the link, Bunsen! Those look great! I’ll be interested to hear what you think of them. Same here – I run in my old sweats that aren’t presentable for running around in the day time (in the dark at 6.15, no one notices…). Hoping to run thru this winter though, so could use some ‘professionally warm’ clothes like tights, tho! Great about the ‘found’ dress! That’s a good feeling!

worknprogress–glad I’m not the only one that didn’t care for underarmor! I felt bad because it was expensive, but even the turtle neck part was tight and that just wasn’t comfortable! Good to hear that other brands are a bit better.

Legwarmers–LOL! One of those things that you hoped your memory could just suppress…and here they are, back again!

Joining in this conversation late but I am really enjoying this thread. I have always been a tiny person – 5’4", 105 pounds, and a 32A bra size (I know, pathetic – now even hard to find bras in this size). With the way sizing has changed over the years (I swear an old size 4 is now a size 0), I have a hard time finding clothes that fit. Many times an XS top is way too big. I do try the junior department but I don’t want to buy too many clothes that my daughter and her friends would wear. People always say “oh, what a problem to have” but it really is a problem because i can’t find many clothes that fit right or look right.

Is anyone else small? Which stores have you had luck finding smaller sized tops?

BunsenBurner - I assume you know that shopping in your own closet is the “new new thing.'” You’re so trendy.

I’m a bit tinier than you are, and I’ve had a lot of luck at Anthropologie: sweaters, blouses, dresses, and skirts. Sometimes, I even go up a size from xs to s. The good thing - and bad thing - about Anthropologie seems to be that it’s more darn expensive than most teen girls can justify spending on a regular basis, so you don’t see the item on every teen girl. The other day I had on a blouse, belt, and skirt purchased at Anthropologie a few years ago and got complimented on the outfit several times while out-and-about running errands. Nice, for an older purchase.

last time I weighed 105, I was in 6th grade!

But, I was 5’6". Because all my little friends were 4 feet something and weighed in at 85 or something, I thought I was obese.

Hey, Mafool, I wonder what those little friends weight now??

I am so excited. I have been in the market for a all-weather coat for awhile. I knew I wouldn’t wear it often, so I wanted something pretty timeless. I stopped into Marshall’s to just check out what was there (I live an hour a way from Nordstroms - so I have to make do!) and found a wonderful coat by Theory for $100. I knew it was a good brand and the material felt great - but I checked online and similar coats were listed for $500. Now - I figure at the end of the season I am doing well if I get a coat at half off - so I was very, very happy to buy a coat @25% of the original price. With the way the weather has been, I will have plenty of opportunities to use.

Now DH never complains about any of my purchases, but somehow I still feel guilty. Will anyone else admit to putting something in the closet and acting like they have had it for awhile???

workinprogress, I feel guilty, but my H doesn’t care! He trusts me with my shopping. I have had so much luck finding great coats at Costco. H’s leather jacket - $70. Both DD’s got Calvin Klein peacoats for $60 apiece. Last year, I got a great down coat for my NE student!

Small sizes… Hmmm… Need coffe and ignatius, you should check out real deigner-designer clothes. They are still sized like they used to be sized in the good old days. I’m current size 4-6, but I will have to get size 10 skirt I’m eyeing on Saks’ site (if it ever goes on sale). Limited used to carry size 00 clothes. And for bras, check out HerRoom dot com - they have all sorts of undies in all sorts of sizes!

BB, that’s a great site for bras. I am definitely ordering. They have lined bras that don’t have extra padding, which are impossible to find. I need some lining so I don’t point at people (nothing like breastfeeding two kids to enhance that look), but hate the padded look. Thanks for the tip!

mousegray, my order from that site came really fast, and I paid no sales tax! That’s an instant 10% savings for me. If your order is more than $75 or so, shipping is free as well. It was the only site I was able to find that sells Shock Absorbers in the US (no kidding, that’s what they are - shock absorbers, LOL!). Hub got a speedo for Christmas - shhhh… I will have to drag him to the pool to practice for that triathlon he wants to do! Also check the assortment of sticky tapes and concealer pads they sell - that’s the Hollywood way of looking snazzy without wardrobe malfunctions - :)

Invited to a party next weekend. Invitation says dress chic if you wish. Any ideas? It is at a friend who has spent the last year remodeling her home. The party is to celebrate the completion. After typing that I realize that I should probably also come up with some gift.

I’m thinking that any of the “looks” suggested in this thread would work for “chic if you wish!” No sneakers, sweats, or mom-jeans. Beyond that, the description would include everything from skinny jeans in kick-a** boots, crisp white shirt and scarf to a little black dress.
