There is an interesting article in the NYT’s about the up tick in the sale of women’s shoes despite this nasty recession. (If I was going to make the plunge and break my resolve, it would probably be due to some of those Stuart Weitzman suede boots!)

I guess I should be glad the Weitzmans are not available in my size.

I’m not surprised that there is an uptick in shoe sales! I’ve bought 2 new pairs already and I don’t really need them. I also bought 2 new wool jackets from Overstock.com. I planned to keep just one (couldn’t decide which one I wanted) and ended up keeping both because they were so inexpensive. I’ve got to quit reading this thread…

Let me tell you, I save so much money by having a D width foot…no problem walking by the Nordstrom shoe department because I know for a fact that none of the cute shoes come in my size!

Jolynne, the sale prices were good, but the store was a zoo! The shoe section was mobbed! I probably had to wait for 20-30 mintes among piles of boxes and frantiaclly running salespeople for my turn to try something on. I feel like such an idiot because I did not buy Nordstrom’s stock @ $8.

I have the opposite problem! Mine is a very typical size, so when cool shoes go on sale, my size is usually either gone or snapped up immediately.

I used to have that problem too… until I discovered Zappos :D

but really, missypie, whenever I go shoe shopping with friends and the salesperson offers to help me, I find myself thinking wistfully, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “Oh, I don’t think there’s anything in that <shoe storeroom=”“> for me.”</shoe>

If it wasn’t for Zappos, I would own no shoes. But there are still lots of styles that they don’t make in wide. And there are very few brands that make wide shoes. And some of the ones that do (like Annie) make cute, but fairly cheap shoes with no padding, etc. I have a lot of Bouquets brand.

I have the opposite problem: my feet are narrow. The Talbots got trashed on another thread awhile back, but they are my main shoe source. Our local Nordstrom (5 minutes from home) doesn’t carry narrow sizes. I might have to try Zappos.

I need boots to take with me to Moscow (going over Thanksgiving to visit D2 who is studying there). They need to be somewhat dressy (according to D2, Russian women tend to dress up rather than down). I need something that will withstand snow/wet/slush. I can’t wear Uggs or any boot that you have to pull on (plate and screws in my right ankle, which has almost no flexibility). Since it’s snowing already, I’ll probably be wearing these boots all day while sightseeing–so comfort is a big consideration. Any suggestions for boots that would work?

No ideas, but just expressing my envy!

Bromfield, are zipper boots ok?

^^^You should look at the options on Zappos. I’m sure you will find something. Enjoy your trip!

Bromfield, a friend says that if you know some Russian, you can post your question about current boot trends in Moscow here (sort of like CC, but only for Q&A):

In a matter of seconds, you will get plenty of opinions. According to the posts, Uggs are very popular in Russia this winter. There are Ugg boots with zippers:

La Canadienne is another brand that makes warm boots suitable for wearing in wet/cold/slushy conditions.

Aack! My H does not have any sense of reality when it comes to shopping!!! OK, he was visiting DD, and she needed some warm clothes. He called me and asked me about stores where he could take her shopping. I joked, “Of course, take her to Neiman Marcus!” Instead of laughing with me, he asked, “How do you spell that? Is there one near Boston?” He was dead serious and would have taken her there! Well, I had to explain to him that Neiman Marcus is spelled “t-j-m-a-x-x” in our household :D

^^^^ lol!

With all this talk of boots, I picked up some nearly new, ‘real’ Uggs at a yard sale for my daughter. Multi-color, high – really cute. $5, yah! Picked up some never-worn running shoes for me for $5 but I think I may have to spring the $90 retail – so I can get my feet assessed at the running store & have them fit perfectly.

Wow, Jolynne, I’m impressed - you have some posh garage sales in your area!

H reported that he took D to the mall, and they ended up getting some boots on sale at Nordstrom’s. OK, fine. But while he was talking to me, a waiter showed up to take their order (they were eating lunch), so H put the phone down, and I heard, “She’ll have the lobster and I’ll have the smoked salmon” Lobster??? Excuse me??? Sigh. At least my Seattle hillbillies did not raid the Neiman Marcus…

I went to the local Rack and found a pair of very comfortable sandals with 3 inch heels. The brand is called Athena Alexander - I have never heard of it before, but I’m impressed! They are so comfy that I wore them around the house while vacuuming today! They look like this:

[Athena Alexander ‘Decide’ Slide](+Women’s+Shoes&origin=searchresults]Athena”>http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3013030?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=guidednav&keyword=athena+in+All+Categories+>+Women’s+Shoes&origin=searchresults)

And they are made in the USA!

BB, I hope you had a snazzy cocktail dress to go with those shoes while vacuuming! Or at least some bunny ears (JK).

Today on RueLaLa- ariat brand. If anyone in your family is a horse rider they have some of the more expensive tall boots on sale for a few hundred off. My D would love a pair but she has a perfectly good pair of one of the less expensive style. They also have cowboy boots and clog like shoes.

Gosh, you’d put even June Cleaver to shame.
