i got accepted 2 days ago. I’m happy that I got into my safety school

The big blue envelope arrived today, I love this school!

Got my acceptance this past Saturday! $20,000 Dean Scholarship, Bio major! I’m so pumped! This was the first school I checked out, and I absolutely loved everything about it. I am currently waiting back for several more applications, but Drew is definitely ranked top of my list with my other favorite, University of Vermont. I plan on visiting for an Ambassador Day in February.

Could anyone perhaps explain the details of what an Ambassador stay is?

Did anyone ever tell you about the retention rate at the school? Its very poor. I entered Fall 2008, and transferred after one semester. Its a HUGE waste of money because there are better schools. A lot of my friends ended up transferring as well.

My son knew a few that transferred, one found it too small, another, his decided major wasn’t represented well (didn’t know that when he came in) another found it too expensive, another was failing classes and having trouble adjusting and his state school was less expensive until he decided what he wanted. He said some students who were well off didn’t hesitate looking into other schools, because aid wasn’t an issue, and they tried again to get into their first choice.
That was just his experience, but most of his class is still there. Depending on your major, Drew can be a very good LAC, but for others, without good aid, might be over-priced, as most private schools are in the northeast.
When I mentioned to my son, how much more money we would have had if he went to our flagship, he said, maybe, but the experience he had with his professors and extra attention and help in his major, made his experience worth it.
That, will vary by each student and although some will dislike the school, others will love it.

Really? Where did you end up going, singingkid? Are you happy there? I hope so.

My D is a junior, a year behind Debrun’s S. Virtually all of her friends have stayed. Several of them are VERY bright. Also, several (including my D) have had amazing travel experiences and/or internships while at Drew. There is no question that Drew is often a safety for people applying to ivies and top ranked LACs. I suspect that some students who didn’t get into their first-choice schools reapply as transfers. Whatever, it is rare to hear of anyone having the totally negative experience you describe. So I guess it depends on what particular students are looking for.

USNEWS reports that Drew’s freshman retention rate is 82.8%.

I am glad to hear about student satisfaction with Drew. On a couple of other websites, there are comments about student dissatisfaction with Drew administration and I found an admissions staff person to be less than friendly on the phone, by comparison to those at other schools.

It’s funny how one person can sway your opinion. When my son was looking at colleges , my husband found Clark to be the friendliest until he went to Drew, he and my son said they topped them all (maybe that person left!) : ) Holy Cross on the other hand was just the opposite with Conn College being the worst. This year, we found Holy Cross to be different and although we didn’t visit Conn College again, I’m sure someone thought they were nice.
In 4 years, I’ve found business/FA to be helpful, that doesn’t mean I always liked the outcome, but they emailed/called promptly and I got any mail or forms I needed on time. My son was always reminded about handing in forms and deadlines.
Warning bells go off for me when I read how bad the FA office is, you have to deal with them too often.

We also had very positive experiences with the Admissions and Financial Aid folks at Drew. In contrast, we had a horrible we-could-care-less-whether-you-come experience with Bard, where D also got in. I suspect (hope!) others have had more positive experiences with the folks at Bard. The Admissions rap at Brown was the most offensive and annoying of all. They made it clear that they didn’t need to convince anyone to come. That’s probably true, but still…All this suggests that it’s really important not to put too much store in any one thing. My D had a less than positive experience with the student Ambassador she stayed with at Drew. For awhile, it negated all the good things that she liked about the college. Glad she didn’t let that deter her from choosing Drew in the end.

Cadbury, that reminds me of my friends niece who went to Holy Cross. Her overnight was so bad that she didn’t want to attend. Fate intervened though and it was the only college with a full track scholarship. She was pushed to attend and ended up loving it AND becoming an ambassador so another prospect wouldn’t have that experience.

Isn’t it interesting? Unenthusiastic students, I can understand; they are kids. I am grateful–and so is the public!–that I do not work in an FA office where the same questions must be answered over and over again. Glad to hear that Drew’s FA staff is helpful. Anyone planning to attend the accepted student events?

My D got her acceptance today and was invited to the Balwin Honors program. (her sister didn’t apply) She’s excited but the 3.5 GPA and possible science major has her pause. We would also need more aid than the generous scholarship because their cost is so high, but we will see in the Spring.

Debruns, congrats to your daughter!

Just got my acceptance letter yesterday along with the $17k scholarship. I plan to attend the accepted student events, as I’m on the fence about this school. I’m poor. :D

Under The Baldwin Honors program 22k a year as long he mantins a 3.5. We plan to visit shortly. Can anyone give me some info about the progam and about the school? I heard its a beautiful campus. He’s a kid who likes a small college and classes where the professor will know you name.
We have been on the website but would like to hear form current or former students.

Thanks!

S2, H, and I are heading to Drew for admitted students event. Maybe other CC folks will be there?
More snow expected in NJ. In northern NE, we have only a little. This sure is “backwards year” for weather!

I found out back in November from the Priority App. that I got in.
I applied as one of my “safties”, but found that I really do like many aspects of the school including their writing, theatre, and pre-law programs! :)

Daughter got her package today! Has anyone else gotten theirs, it’s early which is nice.
They added a grant and loans to the merit award, and workstudy, still high, but not totally out of the question. Have to wait and see what the future brings.
