Drinking at Cornell

I am just wondering if there is drinking at Cornell and how people act about it. Is it generally an environment where there is drinking and everyone is fine with it, or will people start *****ing if they see you drinking?

mom here, not a student, but I know there is drinking on campus, even for underage students. People need to be safe and smart. Cornell is diverse. If you don’t want to drink there are crowds for you. If you do, there are crowds for you and I know non drinkers attend the parties that kids who drink are attending.

You are not supposed to drink in the dorms and can get in trouble if you do so.

it is college…

Drinking is quite common, and most folks don’t tend to care unless they are bothered by a drunk person or simply out to get drinkers for whatever reason.

I wish my parents were as down to earth as you are!

I remember my college days. I experimented with alcohol well before my 21st birthday. I would be a hypocrite to expect that my kids would not experiment either. I don’t encourage that of my kids, but know that it is a reality so I want them to be prepared and to feel like they can discuss it openly with me. I want them to be safe and if they drink, understand the consequences and do it as safely as possible. Sadly, there are kids that die of alcohol poisoning on campus nearly every year. I guess I have a “harm reduction model” approach. It breaks my heart that these fabulous kids die because they are drinking. So, I want my kids to know how to drink responsibly–know when to stop so they can help themselves and their friends in case their friends have too much, don’t ever drive, etc .
