Drinking water - Random dorm room question

Curious where students get their drinking water in the dorms? My son drinks a lot of water and is questioning bringing an old water dispenser we have to fill his water bottles- I would assume they have drinking fountains or water bottle fountains in the hallways? I don’t think there would be space for what he wants to bring - and a lot will depend on whether or not he has a single or double - hope to hear this Friday which dorm. Looks like they took down the old dorm room layouts/floor plans - wonder if they will get new ones up at some point before O-Week.
Thank you!

@caymusjordan buy your son a Brita filter pitcher to keep in his dorm, thats what most kids do to fill their water bottle, it will fit in the fridge of is dorm. Also, the dorm site with floor layouts has been under construction forever. I do not think anything will be added.

all dorms have water fountains. some have more than others. post back when you get the dorm and i can tell you where the water fountains are. i also drink a lot of water and second the idea to keep a pitcher in the room

@caymusjordan My daughter lives in one of the older dorms, and her house has water fountains on each floor. She also has a Brita for her mini fridge. Like your son, she drinks lots of water! There are also water bottle fillers in all the class buildings and dining halls, so hydration will not be a problem.
The housing site has been under construction at a really inconvenient time. However, once room assignments come out, the dorm and the house will each have a closed group facebook page, with RAs and Orientation Aides, and eventually the other residents joining, and they can answer specific questions about the rooms. Those in B-J and Snitchcock are a bit more random in shape and size than those in the newer dorms.

Here’s a surprising secret about Hyde Park (and Chicago generally) tap water. It is excellent. I guess it pays to have a rather large body of fresh water a few blocks to the east. I come from the Mid-South and I was amazed at how good the tap water is in Chicago relative to my home city.

According to HuffPo Chicago’s water is in the top 10.

Kids in the current college generation tend to mistrust tap water but what they’re often not aware of is that a great deal of bottled water, including common brands like Aquafina and Dasani, comes from municipal water supplies.

Seconding the idea of a Brita pitcher.

Thank you all so much - not sure why I didn’t think of the Brita! And, yes, I figured the water would be good - kind of like in NYC…for some reason tough to convince my 18 yo…

I drink tap water every place I go, as long as I’m told it’s safe. Beirut was the exception!! You can’t drink the tap water there, but bottled water is very cheap.

Don’t drink it in India either. Unless you enjoy toilet time.

One more piece of advice-if your kid does go off to school with a Brita send them with filter refills and remind them to use them. I’ve seen a lot of Britas with filters that are never replaced, probably putting them on par with Flint’s municipal water system!

At many colleges, it is very uncool to drink bottled water. Most college students I know are very environmentally conscious. Not sure how that works/the vibe at Chicago but your kid might get enlightened once there.

We ended up with at least 3 UChicago water bottles from all the marketing/events, so I think my daughter is set. LOL. Totally agree - tap water all way.

I agree. Coming from a town in west Texas where the water was drawn from a small dusty lake which received the town sewage along with a few exiguous drops of rain, I thought the elixir of the gods flowed from every Chicago tap.

brita filters are great as well as kettles, which are great if you want to boil water and then wait for it to cool and pour into your filter as an added reassurance

The tap water in Hyde Park is amazingly good.

Tap water for sure!
