Driving test tips

Dont go slow when entering a freeway/highway

Cool.. Thanks much for the tips.. My test is on Tuesday morning so lookin forwar to getting done with it..

Are there 3-point turns in California? And do you need to stop and look even if it's a green light and you're turning right?

Whew, seems like such a long time ago lol. I failed my driving test twice before I passed. Around the area where I live, the DMV's all have their own level of difficulty, meaning that if you go to the one in Camden you'll almost always fail (happened to me twice lol) and another you'll almost always pass (on Shop Road or in Lexington, where I passed finally). The first time I failed because I went over the margin, which is an automatic fail (you have to pull completely off the road and then back back on...lol seems really easy, I know). The second time I failed because I was going to fast at one part and then too slow at another (always go as close to the speed limit as possible). Just be careful when you're taking your test. It might even be helpful to get someone you know to show you the course ahead of time so you can practice if there is a set course. But once you pass it's great!...unless you have to pay for your own gas which I don't lol. You don't have to rely on people picking you up or dropping you off at places, or being too early or late...it's great! Until you have to start running earrands and picking people up but it's still pretty cool. Good luck!

Hahahah.. Had to drive down to JFK today with my brother and drive the passanger, a relative, back home since my brother had to catch a flight. "With great power comes great responsiblity" :D:D

What is this for?

No idea, I thought it was the most stupid reason to fail a test lol but at that particular DMV it was required to pass...so I went to another DMV where they didn't test that and passed. Also, I don't know about your particular test, but during my test people pretty much have to get the parallel parking perfect because it's the last maneuver tested and you'll pretty much have enough points by the end of the test (and you don't want to fail at the end!). But at most DMV's in my area the parallel parking spaces are pretty wide so it's not too bad.

I found the dimensions of the parallel spot and my mom and I took milkjugs to my elementary school and I practiced in the correct sized space :)

It helped

What are the dimensions? I've never seen this info specified....

it varies state to state

I live in Missouri and I found it in the drivers ed booklet online I believe.

ahh..i remember it was only a year ago when i took my test. for the third time. :)

here's my two cents: pace yourself. when you sit behind the wheel, you're bound to get nervous. breathe and relax. also, be confident in yourself (and in your driving). if you aren't confident, then there's no way the person you're driving will be.

if you fail, don't worry. you will have many more opportunities to get your license.

there you go. good luck my friend! :)

I didn't read through all the pages so I don't know if this was mentioned but in my driving test it seemed like the tester intentionally directed me to area that did NOT have speed limit signs, so make sure you know the basic speed limits for types of area, like 15-20 residential(varies by state), 30-40 business district etc.

when I took my test I had to parallel park the very first thing...that was the part I was worried about becuase I had only done it about three times before...I ended up just parking behind a test car in the parking lot with nothing behind me, I probably used up two spots worth of space backing up.

He/She didn't fail you for that?

Also, I had another questoin which I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer since I'm pretty confused..

I always thought that when you reverse, your supposed to flash your hazard lights aka blinkers. However, from what I read, it seems that if you are reversing to the right, you are supposed to show your right turn signal and if your turning left, the left turn signal. Is this true?

I'm also curious what they test on in California, i.e. 3-point turns, parallel parking, so my daughter can know what to be sure to practice.

Best advice: take the driving test THROUGH the place where you take driver's ed (if avaliable). Mine was very good, and they hire their troopers to test you, so they're usually nice, easygoing ones and the driving test won't be that bad. :) All I did was drive to an empty parking lot (1 minute drive), back up alongside a curb for a little while and drive back to the center.

Also, if you take the driver's ed course, they'll tell you everything that you need to know for your driving test (because that's basically what they're working up for.)

A very important tip...

to LOOK like you know what you're doing in the car. When I first started driving, all my motions were kinda awkward and I didn't always check my mirrors and such (bad, very bad. don't be like me) ... when you're doing the driving test, make sure you always check both your mirrors AND look out your side windows/behind you. (esp doing 3 pt turns!) Be relaxed, confident... because the trooper usually knows if you're a good driver or not within the first 30 seconds of your test ;)

Make sure to turn into the correct lanes if your tested on going from a one way to a two way or vice versa and come to complete stops at stop signs. Check your mirrors like crazy as well i've heard of people failing because they never checked their mirrors when they were making lane changes.

Hey...

I did take the 8 hours behind-the-wheel driving course but the guy didn't really answer my questions too well... He was a little too laidback and brushed me off with, "as long as you drive safe, you should be fine"!!!

Anyhow, I'd appreciate it if you guys could answer the turn signal question please. Driving test is tomorrow morning so won't bother you guys after tomorrow, I promise :) !

jai6638 I had to use my turn signal while doing that with my driving teacher yesterday. However, please ask for another opinion i dont want your grade to rest in my hands lol.

I didn't even lose any points for taking a lot of space parallel parking...
I was sure I was going to though.

took my test today and passed. The guy made me do parallel parking, three point turns and backin parking. Thanks a lot for your help guys.. Appreciate it :)
