Drop AP class--let colleges know?

Posting for a friend:

His S completed AP econ class first semester, but will be shifting to regular for next semester. He has applied to UCs and CSUs. Since the change is coming on eve of college decisions, should he tell colleges about the change now, or after he is admitted?

I'd suggest telling them now - he doesn't want a revocation if the colleges feel that they admitted him under false pretenses.

AP Econ was a one semester class for my d; did your son's friend completed the AP Econ curriculum in the fall and is now taking another class in the spring? (My d did AP Econ in the fall and AP Gov't in the spring.) In other words, did he indicate to his colleges he was taking an AP class in the spring that he is no longer taking? I would only notify them if he doing something different than what is indicated on his college applications. But, and it may be too late, the best thing would be to not downgrade in the spring at all.

What is the reason for the switch?

My advice would be to not volunteer any negative information. By volunteer, I mean offer new information that has not been asked for.

Scrutinize the applications, web sites, and anonymously call an admission office or two. Find out if you are really required to update a change in curriculum or not. My guess is the question was about future intentions, and as long as your answers were true at the time there is no reason to mess with it now.

Tell the schools now.

If a student is admitted based on a certain profile and then that profile changes, the decision will get reviewed at certain schools.

Just to be safe, have the student write a quick letter to each school to tell them why the decision was made.

My S switched out of an AP class and into a similar class with different focus after first semester. His guidance counselor told him to send a quick letter to each of the schools he applied to, letting them know of the switch and how it changed the rest of his schedule, since his classes for the year were already on file with his application. He did not elaborate on the reason. I'd agree, send a letter.

Thanks everyone. My friend read thru all the responses, & will do the brief letter route.
