So I’m tagging to UCI for comp sci, and all they want is 2 calc classes and 2 programming classes, which I have. I decided to take calc 3 this semester at my cc to get it out of the way, but its pretty hard. I already failed the first test and in order to pass the class I need to pass every upcoming test with at least a 70%, which doesn’t sound bad but It’s going to be a big challenge for me. I could drop, and I don’t think I’ll be rescinded, because I already have 60 credits and meet the Tag requirements, but that means it’ll take me longer to graduate when I’m at UCI. On the other hand I could take a gamble and suffer my way through the semester, putting more hours into hw and hoping I pass every test, but there’s a good chance I’ll fail the class. The deadline to drop is in April, we’ll take 2-3 tests before then, and I’ll still stick around in the class even if I drop it but I’m not sure what to do. I like programming but I don’t have an interest in the math or theory, and I need this damn class to get a degree
Edit: also my gpa is high enough that even if I fail the class I’ll still have a 3.5.
If you fail it, you will most certainly be rescinded. If you have to fight the whole semester just to manage a C in the class, I wouldn’t bother. Take the W. You’ll be accepted due to your TAG. A non-passing grade would put you in great danger of not meeting your TAG GPA requirement (I’m assuming your TAG said to maintain a particular GPA in the spring?).
You said you’ll stick around in the class even if you drop it. I think that’s a great idea. Hopefully that will help the material sink in more. At least then you’ll have somewhat of a foundation to go off of once you take the course at UCI.
Just be sure to notify all the UCs you applied to that you withdrew from the class. From the information you provided, it doesn’t sound like it will matter.
I agree with Cheolf, drop the class. It could be just the wrong time for you to take it and you don’t want to jeopardize your potential acceptance. Let the UCs know and stick around for the rest of the class. It may take you longer to get through your program at UCI, but at least you’d be at UCI, whereas otherwise you may be rescinded!
@spookysnek I had to drop discrete math (also tag, also CS), which is not a prerequisite, but is sort of recommended, and I contacted UCI about it. As per UCI advisor - normally, this is no biggy, but you need to let them know ASAP.
@Cheolf Yeah dropping it will probably be the best course of action, I had to take calc 2 twice too, so it’s not like I’m unfamiliar with doing this. It’ll be for the best I guess, at least I’ll actually know what I’m doing the second time around.
@lenocturne I feel your pain, I took that class not knowing what was happening half the time. I don’t know how, but I passed it, barely, it was kind of a fluke lol. For UCI, did you go into MyAdmissions to update or did you call their counseling number? I’m not really sure who to contact.
@spookysnek I would email admissions. It is imperative that you have a “paper trail” in regard to these sort of things. That way if there is an error on their end you have evidence on your side.
@spookysnek I actually really liked DM, but due to some changes in my work schedule could no longer attend the class.
I called their admissions office. I am not sure if we are allowed to post phone numbers here, but it’s the first phone number on their Contact us page. They advised me to send them a message through their my admission portal (they probably emailed you your login info shortly after you applied as well), so that they have it in writing and to update my TAU, so that other UCs (in case if you applied elsewhere) get a copy of this information.
