Dropping a required course for my major :(

I am mechanical engineering major trying to transfer to UCI or UCSD with TAG. My GPA is 3.49, and I just got my acceptance letter from UCI. This semester I am taking 3 required courses for my major - Calc III, Linear Algebra and Differential Equation.

I am doing ok in my Calc III and LA class. However, I am almost certain that I will not be able to pass my differential equation class. What do you guys think would be the best available option for me? The deadline for dropping the course is 4/20. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

If you absolutely know that you will not pass, then drop it, notify the schools you applied to, and try taking it over summer

Well it is still possible to pass the course, if I somehow manage to get 90%+ in the next test and final. I am thinking if it’s worths a shot.

Since I am taged, will dropping a course affect my admission to UCI?

cram like you’ve never crammed before.

You can try calling uci admissions and ask what would happen if you dropped the course.

when’s the last drop date?

just keep it in mind that if you drop it you are not breaking the contract, but if you fail you are.

Definitely call the school. Dropping may automatically disqualify you for TAG - may not be worth it. Also, what guarantee do you have that the class will be available as a summer course and that you’ll be able to get into the class (most classes fill quickly).

It might be worth cramming the studying - pay for a tutor (this is always the best invested money) - you won’t regret it.

call admissions and tell us what they say

@RunMCR

the last date to drop is 4/20, and unfortunately dropping any courses listed as “in progress” or “planned” on the UC application does break the contract, and this rule applies to everyone:
[UCI - Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/maa_uci/transfer_contract.html)

However, I have heard that UCI would allow students to retake courses during semester, but I am not sure if that is true. I am shooting an email to them and Ill let you guys know what they say.

Just call the school because I dropped a course that was put as planned on my application and was still admitted to ucsb

OK I got a response from UCI…

Dear XXX,

Dropping any of those course may not affect your
admission since you’ve met all the required
courses and you will have the required 60 semester
units by the end of spring 2011. A final decision
on your admission will be made when we receive
your final transcripts. Please note though that if
you drop any of those courses, you will likely
have to take them at UCI. Also, please make sure
that you read and understand your Personalized
Transfer Contract and the UC Irvine Transfer
Student Contract.

Please send another message when you decide which
course to drop so that I can make a note in your file.

Best Regards,
