Hello, I’m currently a high school senior and I’'m highly considering dropping my Personal Finance class in the second semester. There really is no reason that I need to take it; it is an elective course and I have all my credits fulfilled, and I don’t really learn anything there anyways. The class wasn’t even one I chose or on my list of backup classes to enroll me in; there was a scheduling error at the beginning of the year and this ended up being the only open class for me. I am doing well in all of my classes including Personal Finance, there is just no need at all for me to take it and it is just extra time and work out of my day. My schedule is plenty rigorous as well, so I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t look like I’m trying to lighten the load (all my other classes are APs). Would dropping it second semester be alarming to colleges in any way?
Probably not. But if you’ve already applied for colleges, you would need to inform them of the change in your schedule. If they have an issue with it, they will tell you.
What would you replace it with?
What is covered in that class? My bet is that it looks a bit easy and boring to you right now, but if you pay attention, what you learn just might save your financial skin more than one time in the future.
go ahead and drop it after you inform the colleges you are applying to. Better to have one open period and a strong finish to your Sr year with rigorous classes than an early case of Senioritis.
My DS had an open period his senior year and used it to do homework, study , refine his college essays and every once in a while, relax.
I dropped like two classes the second semester of my senior year so that I could sleep in and come to school at 10am. Most schools don’t care, as long as you’re still on track to graduate and still challenging yourself. I can’t imagine why dropping an elective would matter.
You need to tell top schools, but it shouldn’t affect your admissions.
Our school wouldn’t let my son drop his elective for the 2nd 1/2 of senior year because they had already sent transcripts. They didn’t give the option of notifying the schools. Discuss with your GC and see their thoughts.
Is the class teaching you anything about how to manage your personal finances? It may be useful in that respect.
