I’m in quite a pickle. I am currently a cc student who’s looking to transfer to the UC system notably UCSD, UCI, UCD, or UCSC. I am currently in rolled in calc 2 for the second time (originally had a W) and recently realized I’ll need a miracle to get a B. With that being said my hopes of transferring as a Mathematics or CS major are gone if I receive a C. This has been the sole class I have struggled with the most as I have completed most CS classes with A’s and my first Physics course with a B. Can I drop the course and try once more, and if so, how will this impact my chances to getting accepted into UCI, UCSC, UCD, and UCSD?
Do you want to be a math or CS major because you love math/CS, or because you aspire to a career that you feel requires a math/CS major?
Either way, repeatedly struggling in Calc2 might be a sign that you should reevaluate your whether math/cs is right for you.
If you’re you’re struggling in math, you seriously don’t need to torture yourself with a CS degree. It’s seriously overkill. I suck at math and I do programming for a living. CS is really just geared around one small subset of technology. Most CS graduates end up in corporate IT jobs and spend an entire career never looking at a math problem. That’s where the jobs are.
A degree in Information Technology is more than enough to land you a good entry-level job somewhere, and it really doesn’t matter where you go to school. Be sure to take a level 1 & level 2 course in a widely used language like SQL, Java, .NET, etc.
I’m in the same position but unfortunately the withdrawal date has passed. If I were you, I would withdraw from the class and switch to a related major. I beyond wish I could do that now. I have a 4.0 and I am not even looking at a B in the class, but probably a C. I am trying to see all I can do to still save my GPA and chances at transferring.
