Dunno, I just got an email selling Duke, from the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
"Duke University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions has informed me about your outstanding academic qualifications as well as your demonstrated commitment to co- and extracurricular activities."
I don't know if this is correlated to likely letters or not, who knows. Whatever. It's 3 weeks till everyone gets decisions, no point thinking about it too much.

How many people are almost absolutely sure of heading to Duke this fall? I know I am :).

i'm fairly certain i am :)

I will likely be as well if I get scholarship money :-x Still checking the mailbox everyday for a scholarship interview letter arggggh

Dude I just REALLY NEED my letter lol. I'm in the same boat as 2o_o7. It would be a relief just to get a Duke Up Close letter--at least then I'd know I wasn't in the running for a scholarship.

I haven't gotten anything...

Stupid SAT scores, but do I have an okay shot of getting into Duke? I would post my stuff, but it is all in my profile. I'm so nervous... I got deferred from Yale, so does that give any indication of what I can expect?

erh, don't worry about it at ALL. It's really ridiculous to stress out about not getting a letter or a scholarship invite--I totally know how you feel because I was deferred at Yale, too, and I got a likely letter from Duke. Then, I got rejected by the Robertson scholarship at Duke/UNC, and now I found out I wasn't selected for any Duke merit scholarships. It's tempting for me to wallow and worry excessively--"Omg, this means I won't get in anywhere!!!" but that's really not right.
College admissions is SUCH a crapshoot. You shouldn't assume that one piece of news has ominous meaning. The decisions you've gotten (or not gotten) don't foretell anything. Let's stick it out till March 29. No point getting too worked up, right? :)

How do you know you weren't selected for any Duke merit scholarships?? Did the scholarship invites go out?

momtomany:

the duke likely letters said that we would either get an invitation to duke up close or for a scholarship weekend. they got duke up close invitations.

speaking of duke up close, who all is going? it's april 10-12

I just got invited to a Latino Weekend. Does everyone that's Latino get invited to this?

EDIT: OMFG I just read this on the brochure!

Q. Does this mean I've been admitted to Duke?

A. Naturally, inviting you to campus means that we think you're a very strong candidate for admission. Very occasionally, something happens or we receive new information between the time we mail our invitation and the time we finalize admissions decisons, and we find we can't admit someone we've invited. But that's very rare. Your chances of being admitted are excellent.

OMFG! Did anyone else receive anything like this?

iwiw17

Are you sure about that? I've heard it reported here both ways. I've heard that the up close mailout said that if they were selected, they'd hear by mid-March. I don't know b/c we threw it out. But I also heard it was either/or. Anyone know for sure? Anyone out there currently on Duke Merit Scholarship who can speak to this?

Thanks!

I hope not attending the recruitment weekend doesn't hurt my chances.

momtomany, I re-read my Duke likely letter (received in February). It specifically says that scholarship finalists are NOT invited to Duke Up Close; they are invited to scholarship finalist weekends instead. That's almost verbatim. So, the logical conclusion is, if you were invited to Duke Up Close, you are not a scholarship finalist. This was confirmed by several of my friends--one of them was invited to Duke Up Close last year and as such he knew he was not selected for a scholarship. He did not end up getting any merit money, obviously. His friend was not invited to Duke Up Close; she was invited to a scholarship finalist weekend. She didn't get any money in the end either, though.

I just got the huge envelope inviting me to the Black Student Alliance Invitational Weekend. It definitely came as a surprise. Is anyone else going? Also, since I have not heard about any merit scholarships does this mean I will not receive one?

Abena, when does the Black Student Alliance Invitational Weekend take place? I want to see if it's the same weekend as the Latino one, which takes place from March 29th to the 1st of April.

The Black Student aliiance one is a week earlier than the Latino one. It is from March 22 to the 25.

My friend says he got in and the letter says you've been invited to join the class of 2011, and april something to something he is invited to come to duke and be chosen out for 42 candiates for some scholarship anyone else get that as yet?

Anyone else here get likely letters EXTREMELY late? I was deferred EA from Yale, and had only been checking my mail obsessively in hopes of something from Dartmouth (which didn't come--grrr), and then after reading all these people talking about Duke likelies on here, I'd figured I'd missed out on that one, too. Then, I randomly check my email and get the Up Close invite dated March 14, and then the letter/brochure & letter-to-the-parents a few days later. Definitely a huuuge relief, though it didn't give me much time before registration to figure out if I could go. Free trip, though? Kinda too good to pass up, haha.

Gives me a bit more hope for my top choices now, too, though being in the top 350 out of 19000 is flattering enough to bump Duke up on my list significantly. XD

Oh, I got the "top 350" letter.. it was just more of a late letter than an early letter. Judging by what other people have quoted from their letters, though, I'm pretty sure it's the same deal. Same flattery, promise of acceptance so long as I don't screw up, and definitely enough to make my parents all in favor of me going to Duke when they hadn't seriously considered it before.

many asked, but i havent seen a clear cut response. anyone know if international students received likely letters as well? are all those who received it living in the states, sure it's not likely that duke would invite international students to duke close up, but UCLA invited me to an engineering open day, while cornell sent me a likely letter (i live in hong kong).

im really worried now that i havnet received any emails/mail from duke other than the ones they send out to everyone, since duke is my first or second choice... and i cant wait till wednesday/thursday haha
