Duke BME and PRE-MED

I have read in a couple threads on CC
such as this one <a href="http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?8/75064%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?8/75064</a> that Duke

that BME has 100% acceptance rate to med school. Can anyone link me to an official site that substantiates this? Also, what about BME is so great that helps students get into med school? (i.e. is there some type of special program where studnets get extra exposure to medical/clinical work or volunteering, etc)

I can't say anything about the statistic because I personally have never heard that. But I think BME helps a bit with med school because of the challenging nature of the courses. But then again, you can easily get into med school with a bio or chem major and save yourself a lot of effort...

All I can say is choose BME only if that's what you really want to do. Don't do it only because you think it'll get you into med school or somehow make your application look better, it's too much of a commitment for just that purpose.

I can't speak to the stats - as for what makes BME great at getting folks into Medical School, primarily it is because the subject matter and modes of learning are well tuned to the medical fields. The general academic discipline of engineering coupled with a field of study that touches biology, chemistry, biochem, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, and the like is certainly fertile ground for starting a career as a medical professional.

As for "special programs" - one of the things about Duke is that you have a lot of flexibility to "choose your own adventure" when it comes to your education. With the hospital just across the street and the Genomics Institute in the same building, there are myriad opportunities for enrichment.
