@IyaYard I’m interested in business and economics, so I like Duke cause their econ program is rly good xD. I dont think the guaranteed Trasnfer Option thing is common for all schools. It may just be for Cornell idk.
@yoyohi thanks, that explains
No word today again, still hopeful
No word today again, still hopeful
still no updates
Just got an email that they have concluded admissions…Hopkins it is for me…
Boo. Son got email too. It’s over for this year. I wonder how many kids they took off the wait list for Pratt Engineering. I think I just saw one on CC this year, but did anyone hear of others?
Really really sad, but we move on. Son heads to Northwestern , I have come to terms with it all but for the quarters and holiday period. Not good for our family, That is still so hard. Anyone going to Northwestern??
@MOMANDBOYSTWO only Sarah got of Pratt wait list on this thread.
Lots of hard work, wait and worry. Now all has come to an end.
@MOMANDBOYSTWO & @IyaYard – sorry it didn’t work out for Duke. However, Cornell & Northwestern are fantastic schools. I’m sure that by Christmas, they will be happy with their schools and thriving. Best of luck.
I got the email that they concluded admissions. Guess im going to Berkeley
Thanks for the nice final comments @yoyohi @IyaYard @wstrav
Best wishes to all this fall! Berkeley, Northwestern, etc. are, of course, incredible opportunities!
@wstrav Do you have a daughter entering Duke this fall? If so, enjoy! You will be much warmer at Parents’ Weekend than I will be!
To future applicants: This goes against what some diehard CC parents like to advise, but I would strongly consider applying ED if you want to do engineering at Duke. It is a small school relative to other rigorous, highly ranked engineering programs, and thus has fewer spots to offer. And, half of Pratt’s limited spots go to ED kids.
I wanted Duke for my son a little more than he wanted it, and he elected not to apply ED. He also decided not to do an interview. He was waitlisted RD.
For whatever reason, I think he saw more techie wow factors at other engineering schools, even after a full-day immersion at Pratt. He is very happy about his decision to attend Cornell & wears his new Cornell t-shirt all the time!
I, on the other hand, liked Duke because of its relatively small size and proximity to home. I was the one haunting the waitlist thread…Hoping I might change his mind if the opportunity arose…
Full disclosure: I am an alum of both Duke & Cornell, so either school is really great in my humble opinion! Ironically, I also thought that every other school we visited (about 25!) was terrific as well! We never got the chance to tour Northwestern or Berkeley, but, based on everything we read & heard from friends who go there, you will love those schools!
There is a lot of hype about the competition for colleges these days, but, in reality, hard-working, smart students usually seem to have appealing options.
@MOMANDBOYSTWO, my older daughter just finished her freshman year at Duke. My younger daughter will be applying to schools next year. Having been through the process once, I know it’s tough and seemingly senseless at times, but I agree with you that there are many great colleges out there. Almost every one we visited, I thought, “Wow, I wish I could go here.”
sob, sob, warmer weather, better holidays,
too late to know ED was the way to go with colleges. Guess we were not confident earlier and looking out for better SAT scores was our down side.
Northwestern is a great school , I just have a problem with the holidays as I would be visiting from outside of the US and 2 sons in different colleges with different holiday period is expensive and hectic .
From the look of things transferring is almost impossible as acceptance rate is even worse. I guess I have to surrender at this point and accept my fate.
This is my last child, we worked really, really hard. through Thanksgiving and Christmas last year.
12 acceptances and 3 waitlist. But my heart was on the wastlist. funny.
hmmm, hmmm,
Now all I want is a 2 semester college and a great Engineering school.
This process was really tough, like a million essays plus scholarship application.
Son heads to Northwestern next weekend for a summer Engineering program. Life moves on
I hope we can all laugh about this some day. but now sob, sob sob.
@MOMANDBOYSTWO Cornell is an awesome trade off for Duke. We didn’t apply there. Sound like you have 2 boys too.
All the best everyone and GOD bless
If he ends up choosing something like applied math and engineering system, chemical engineering, material sciences, or industrial engineering, you will laugh about it because those are not offered at Duke.
@IWannaHelp @IyaYard @yoyohi So, true. Duke’s only apparent advantage in engineering is just that it is a small school compared to many, and has better weather than some. But, it is limited in its engineering offerings. Ironically, I think that Northwestern, Berkeley, Cornell and others where kids on this thread will be attending are actually better-ranked and deeper engineering schools than Duke. Everyone here should all be thrilled! I guess no one likes to be rejected though.
@IWannaHelp @MOMANDBOYSTWO Duke is tops in BME but my last hold on Duke was the weather, distance and 2 semester system against Northwestern, But time to make the best of what we have. and move on. I hear transfer to Duke, JHU and Cornell is almost impossible, so surrender is the way to go
